Hello everyone! I've started playing games that provide opportunities for you to earn money rather than just spend on it! One of the ones I've been enjoying is Splinterlands, a game that rewards you for playing by allowing you to sell your cards directly to others. If you're like me and have been trying to earn money from your hobbies rather than spend it, Splinterlands seems like an excellent place to start.
How to Start?
Starting out on Splinterlands is incredibly easy. It's a browser-based game that is *technically* functional on mobile and allows you to sign up with just an email and password. You'll be brought to the landing page with some play options below your profile banner.
Practice: Play against another player in an unranked match. I recommend playing 10-15 games total with at least one game of each summoner you start with.
Ranked: Earn rewards for playing, face difficult opponents. The ranked skill level even at the bottom levels is MUCH MUCH more difficult than practice, so be sure to, well, practice.
Challenge: Play against your friends! There are lots of stipulations to be made to almost provide a feel of different game types. I also recommend fine tuning chain ideas with your friends as a nice middle ground between practice and ranked.
How To Play: Takes you to their guide of card types, how to read a card, how combat works, etc. It is an excellent guide that's very beginner-friendly. I anticipated having a section to break it down, but after going through it you are perfectly set up to start a practice match.
Your First Game
To start out, I highly recommend some practice games as stated above. While you will not earn rewards, it is far more likely you face chains of similar power levels which allows you to see how the basic mechanics interact.
You will be given a set of restrictions for your deck building at the start of a match.
Mana and splinters available to choose from are the two main variations. You will have 1 spot for a summoner and 6 spots to place cards/units every game but the mana you have to work with fluctuates, making every game feel a little bit different. I'll leave the fine details of each splinter and base cards to the How to Play section on their site, as it's quite easy to follow.
- Select Splinter
- Fill up allocated mana (or as close to as possible)
- Finalize chain
- Battle!
Early on I really recommend seeing what units your opponents play and try to predict how the chains will play out. It will allow you to learn new cards and see what playstyles you may be interested in. The practicing prediction of chains will help you strategize for future restrictions and have a better idea of how your chain actually plays out in practice.
Market And Other Options
After you played your first few games and want to start expanding your collection, the market is your best bet for acquiring new cards.
You have two options of getting cards for your collection:
Opening Packs
You can earn packs through saving DEC and each pack contains 5 cards with a chance of getting a rare. If you choose to use fiat or crypto, you can also purchase them with credits. If you would like to expand your overall collection with less of an emphasis on competitive play, packs are excellent. You can also purchase potions to enhance your packs if you're feeling lucky or want foils.
Using the Market
If you have splinters that you enjoy the most, or cards in specific that you want to acquire, the market is your best route. You can use DEC or credits to purchase individual cards. Prices fluctuate depending on sellers, as it is an open marketplace not a controlled market, and I would purchase one copy of cards that you are interested in to confirm that you like the card before purchasing additional copies.
Leveling Cards: Consider this a mini section. Beyond unlocking cards, you level them up by acquiring additional copies of cards. There are a couple key points:
- You combine cards to increase the level of that card and increase it's stats and abilities. You can see how your card will change level by level on the card detail and selecting the stats tab. This lets you see if you would enjoy leveling the card beyond level 1
- Foils are leveled separately, so if you have a level 3 card and a foil version of it, the foil is level 1 and can't be combined. Same goes for different versions or arts of cards. This is not mentioned anywhere in the introduction and can be very costly, especially if you are buying summoners which on average are much more expensive.
Now that you know what the game's about, how to play and learn from your first few games, and how to grow your collection, start grinding! As I spend more time with the game I will have a similar style post to the economy of Splinterlands and ways you can currently earn money from playing or contributing.
