Across Protocol

Introducing Across : The INTENT-ional Protocol

By Jernie | Jernie The Writer | 16 Dec 2024

I am a very INTENT-ional lady.

I am intentional about my finances, my health, and my family.

So, when it comes to projects and platforms, all I ask is for that same level of intentionality—especially when it concerns my assets and time.

This is exactly why I was drawn to Across Protocol.

Across stands out as a project that is INTENT-ional about its users. It simplifies the complex and often frustrating process of moving assets across blockchains. Whether you’re bridging assets between Ethereum and Layer 2 networks or interacting with decentralized finance (DeFi), Across delivers a seamless, efficient, and secure experience designed to work in your best interest.

WHAT IS ACROSS PROTOCOL?

Across Protocol is an interoperability protocol powered by intents. It is the first cross-chain intents protocol in production today, enabling fastest and lowest-cost transfers with better security trade-offs than traditional bridge designs.

Here’s the magic:

1. Users make a simple request: Like "Move my 10 ETH to Arbitrum."

2. Relayers race to fulfill this request quickly and cheaply.

3. You get your funds ASAP!

THE PROBLEM ACROSS IS SOLVING

Today, there are over 1,000 active blockchain networks, with more emerging to meet diverse use cases across DeFi, gaming, supply chain, and more.

While this growth offers flexibility, it creates major challenges, including:

  • Fragmentation.
  • Slow and expensive transactions.
  • Super complex technical jargon.

All these  suppresses the full potentials of DeFi and also reduces participation especially from newbies.

Let me simplify this a bit further:

Imagine trying to send a simple text message across to your buddy and its costing over $10 and taking up to 1 hour to deliver.

It sounds frustrating right!!

Well that’s exactly what it feels like to bridge assets without Across Protocol—slow, expensive, and unnecessarily complex.

Across changes this narrative by offering fast speeds, low costs, and an intent-based design.

WHO MAKES UP ACROSS ECOSYSTEM?

1. Users

As a user, you are at the heart of Across. Whether you are bridging assets between Ethereum and Layer 2s or interacting with dApps, Across gives you a smooth, intuitive experience.

Just bring your intent, Across handles the rest.

2. Relayers

Relayers are the delivery guys of Across Protocol. They advance funds instantly to your destination chain. Relayers take on risks (gas fees, capital) but earn rewards for their service.

3. Liquidity Providers (LPers)

LPs are the backbone of the protocol, they supplying the funds used to reimburse relayers. In return, they earn fees and rewards for their participation.

4. Dataworkers

Dataworkers are truth-checkers. They validate relayers’ work by submitting proofs, thuscmaintaining the system’s integrity and trust.

5. Governance Participants ($ACX Holders)

$ACX holders help in governing the protocol. They are able to propose, vote, and implement improvements to guide the protocol’s growth.

6. UMA's Optimistic Oracle

At the center of Across’ security is UMA’s Optimistic Oracle. It verifies transactions optimistically—assuming correctness unless proven otherwise.

Summary of the workflow

  • Users initiate the intent.
  • Relayers fulfill the intent instantly.
  • Liquidity Providers ensure smooth transfers.
  • Dataworkers keep everything honest.
  • Governance Participants guide the future.
  • UMA’s Oracle secures it all.

Each role works together in harmony, creating a system that’s fast, reliable, and trustless.

STANDOUT FEATURES OF ACROSS PROTOCOL.

1. Intent-Based Architecture

The intent-based architecture used by Across Protocol offers a user-centric approach that simplifies blockchain interactions, particularly cross-chain transactions. Unlike traditional methods, where users must manually craft detailed transaction steps for each action, Across allows users to define only their goal (the intent), and the system autonomously handles the execution. For example, if a user wants to move assets from Ethereum to Arbitrum, they simply specify the intent (e.g., "Move 10 ETH to Arbitrum"), and Across’s network of relayers competes to fulfill this request in the most efficient way, saving both time and transaction costs.

This significantly improves user experience by abstracting away the complexities of blockchain operations, allowing users to focus solely on their desired outcomes.

2. ERC-7683

ERC-7683 is a proposed Ethereum standard designed to standardize the process of cross-chain transactions, particularly for systems based on INTENT.

It was developed in a collaboration between Across Protocol and Uniswap Labs and addresses the fragmentation and lack of interoperability that have been common in cross-chain systems.

By using ERC-7683, Across aims to make cross-chain transactions not only faster and cheaper but also more secure and efficient.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the user experience in decentralized finance (DeFi) by reducing costs, simplifying processes, and increasing the reliability of cross-chain interactions.

3. Across+

Across+ introduces bridge hooks at the dApp level, bundling bridging actions with other activities like staking or swapping. This allows for seamless, chain-agnostic experiences for end-users.

HOW SECURE IS ACROSS?

Across Protocol ensures high security through the use of UMA's Optimistic Oracle, which provides decentralized transaction validation. The oracle works by allowing any participant to propose a transaction's validity. If no dispute arises in a set period, the transaction is confirmed. This dispute mechanism helps ensure honesty within the system.

Additionally, Across only transfers canonical assets, meaning real, on-chain assets, reducing risks associated with minted or representative tokens. Relayers front their own capital for cross-chain transfers, ensuring the safety of users' funds without extra trust assumptions.

Together, these features make Across a secure and trustworthy protocol for cross-chain transactions.

GETTING STARTED WITH ACROSS.

Using Across is as easy as A-B-C:

1. Visit Across Bridge

2. Connect your wallet.

3. Choose an action—bridge assets, provide liquidity, or explore other options.

4. Approve and verify transaction details.

It's as simple as that.
