If you use Solflare, and especially if you actively traded meme coins during the peak Solana airdrop craze, you may be able to reclaim 'free' SOL you had no idea you had.
I remember those days: BONK, BERN, CWIF (catwifhat), Jeo Boden (BODEN) and Doland Tremp (TREMP). It's a long list.
During the craze, you'd get airdrops that generated airdrops, and you might be sitting on a hidden stash of SOL without even realizing it.
Every time you bought, traded, or claimed one of those trending tokens, your wallet created a hidden record on the blockchain.
Even if you sold all your coins months ago and your token balances are at absolute zero, those empty accounts are likely still holding your SOL hostage.
Unlike Ethereum, where data is written directly to a single wallet address, Solana requires every token balance, NFT, or smart contract interaction to live inside its own dedicated sub-account.
Every time the account is created, a small minimum deposit of SOL (typically around 0.002 SOL) is locked inside that account to cover its permanent storage costs.
So even if the balance dropped to 0, if the account stays open, your SOL stays locked.
If you traded dozens or maybe hundreds of tokens, those tiny 0.002 SOL deposits quickly add up.
Earlier today, I was doing some 'housekeeping', and finally managed to close (nearly) all of those accounts, selling dust for SOL.
While I only received fractions of cents, the fact I had so many empty accounts allowed me to close them and reclaim SOL.
I was able to close around 50 accounts across three wallets (all on Solflare), and I reclaimed around $15-20 in total.
Not enough to pay rent, but hey, it's enough for enough coffee for a few days or weeks.
