When I was in my mid-40's, I ran into an old flame at the grocery store.
A couple days later, we went out to dinner.
We enjoyed catching up on each other's lives.
She had married and divorced. I had married, then became a widower.
We talked about life's ironic twists, turns, triumphs, and tragedies.
We laughed - bragging about our children, while commiserating about parenthood.
Then she decided to make a confession that made both of us feel much better.
Here's what happened...
Abruptly, her sweet smile vanished. Then she put down her wine glass and took a deep breath.
Looking me squarely in the eye, she said, "JaiChai, I need to tell you something important. Just listen, OK?"
(I nodded.)
"Back then, I was young and very desperate. My parents relied on me for the support of my son, brothers and sisters.
You were...and still are...very handsome, charming and always a lot of fun to be with.
After that first night, I could feel myself falling in love with you.
But I knew I couldn't stay with you.
You looked much too young to be a pensioner. I thought you must've been just another ”Two Week Millionaire " - a good time that NEVER lasts.
Much later, I learned how some U.S. Military people can actually retire at the age of 37.
Anyway, I ran off with that old, fat foreigner because he promised to take me to the States.
He lied.
I'm so sorry. And I hope you understand that I did what I had to do.
Because in my world, YOU CAN'T EAT LOVE..."
Imagine that?
Submitted for you to ponder in a quiet place.
May you and yours be well and loving life today.
