Alternatives to DeviantArt: Creary and Weasyl

Following my initial failure to find a satisfactory alternative to DeviantArt (which I sometimes called "Deviant Tart", partially for the LoLs but mainly for other reasons), I've gone back to the drawing board. Thanks to the help of the wonderful site that is AlternativeTo.net (crowdsourced software reviews), here are the Websites that have grabbed my interest and which I have investigated (id est, read their ToU and privacy policies and, for those which I have no objections, I'm going to create accounts):

Dribbble

While it initially looked ideal (doesn't forbid NSFW content), the fact that it forbids promoting content on external sites and requires personally identifying information in order to create an account makes it a no-go for me.

Behance

  • AlternativeTo URL: https://alternativeto.net/software/behance-network/about/
  • Official Website URL: https://www.behance.net/
  • Description/Slogan: The Creative Professional Platform. The world's leading platform for creative professionals to gain exposure and manage their careers.
  • Familiarity: Well-established as one of the main competitors to Deviant Art.
  • Allows Adult/Sexual/NSFW Content?: Don't know; didn't look, but suspect not
  • Pricing: Don't know; didn't look
  • Job Board/Hiring?: Yes
  • Main Con: Requires an Adobe ID to connect

Pixiv

  • AlternativeTo URL: https://alternativeto.net/software/pixiv/about/
  • Official Website URL: https://www.pixiv.net/en/
  • Description/Slogan: Pixiv is the premier online artist community where members submit illustrations, manga, and novels or browse work created by others. Join the millions that make up the Pixiv community.
  • Familiarity: Today is the first time I've seen it, so none on my side.
  • Allows Adult/Sexual/NSFW Content?: Probably not, since it's built on Google technology
  • Main Con: It's built on Google technology

500px

  • AlternativeTo URL: https://alternativeto.net/software/500px/about/
  • Official Website URL: https://500px.com/
  • Description/Slogan: 500px is an online photography community that lets you create stunning professional photo portfolios, find friends, express yourself and connect with like-minded people.
  • Familiarity: Some. Someone with whom I used to work uses it when he needs graphic content for marketing and/or Websites.
  • Allows Adult/Sexual/NSFW Content?: Don't know; didn't look
  • Main Positive: Has an NFT vault, so presumably incorporates Web3 features
  • Main Negative: "High resolution images must not contain watermarks, signatures, or photo borders. These elements must be removed, along with any other creative/personalized text before submitting your photo." Considering that my images will be for promotion and only the NFTs will be devoid of watermarks and other identifying marks, this is a deal-breaker for me.

Logamp

  • AlternativeTo URL: https://alternativeto.net/software/logamp/about/
  • Official Website URL: https://logamp.com/
  • Description/Slogan: Whether it be music, art or even literature, Logamp specializes in sharing your creation with the world with tons of users worldwide. You too can be apart of the newest online crave. Meet new musicians and artist and even future authors. Connect, love , and be creative with Logamp - The New Indie Forefront.
  • Familiarity: None
  • Allows Adult/Sexual/NSFW Content?: I don't know; I didn't get that far through the ToU.
  • Top Positive: I can host my music and videos on it (and presumably long-form writing)
  • Top Con: "By creating an Account on our service, you agree to subscribe to newsletters, marketing or promotional materials and other information we may send." By default, this is opt-out, rather than opt-in. "In addition, Content found on or through this Service are the property of Logamp or used with permission. You may not distribute, modify, transmit, reuse, download, repost, copy, or use said Content, whether in whole or in part, for commercial purposes or for personal gain, without express advance written permission from us." So, once I post my content on Logamp, it's no longer mine and I can't sell it? Hard pass!

Creary

  • AlternativeTo URL: https://alternativeto.net/software/creary/about/
  • Official Website URL: https://creary.net/
  • Description/Slogan: Creary is the decentralized, blockchain-based social network, without censorship, of creative portfolios that rewards digital artists and curators. Be creative! Creary is "aimed at all artists, musicians, designers, writers and professionals in the audiovisual sector who produce digital content and use the Internet to sell or distribute their creations among their fans and followers. As an innovative fact, in Creary, users will receive rewards for the interactions their content receives. The likes are not just likes anymore, so users should bet on the quality of what is published to get a good community of followers who vote for their works. Get your first CREA sharing quality works on the platform. Receive donations every time you receive a “like” from other users."
  • Familiarity: None
  • Allows Adult/Sexual/NSFW Content?: Presumably, since content is not censored. I didn't look, since CREA is defunct.
  • Top Positive: Decentralised and blockchain-based
  • Top Con: It uses its own on-site cryptocurrency, CREA, which CoinGecko reports as "deactivated and inactive". Well, that's a pity,  because the description makes the site look worthwhile otherwise. However, I'll be using it for promotion, not as a primary earning site. Maybe it will still meet my needs.

Weasyl

  • AlternativeTo URL: https://alternativeto.net/software/weasyl/about/
  • Official Website URL: https://www.weasyl.com/
  • Terms of Service URL: https://www.weasyl.com/policy/tos
  • Community Guidelines URL: https://www.weasyl.com/policy/community
  • Privacy Policy URL: https://www.weasyl.com/policy/privacy
  • Description/Slogan: Weasyl is a social gallery website designed for artists, writers, musicians, and more to share their work with other artists and fans. We seek to bring the creative world together in one easy to use, friendly, community website.
  • Familiarity: None
  • Allows Adult/Sexual/NSFW Content: Considering the ToU doesn't explicitly/expressly forbid such, the Community Guidelines state that content can be categorised as "Mature" or "Explicit" and there's a lot of Furry content on it, I'm giving that a definite "Yes". Woot!
  • Top Positive: I can host both audio and visual content on it. Also, this is in the ToU: " Individuals who have posted works to Weasyl are either the copyright owners of the component parts of that work or are posting the work under license from a copyright owner or his or her agent or otherwise as permitted by law. You may not reproduce, distribute, publicly display or perform, or prepare derivative works based on any of the Content including any such works without the express, written consent of Weasyl or the appropriate owner of copyright in such works. Weasyl does not claim ownership rights in your works or other materials posted by you to Weasyl, hence forth known as Your Content. [...] Weasyl has no ability to control the Content you may upload, post or otherwise transmit using the Service and does not have any obligation to monitor such Content for any purpose. You acknowledge that you are solely responsible for all Content and material you upload, post, or otherwise transmit using the Service."
  • Top Con: Has a lot of Furry/My Little Pony content, leading some reviewers on AlternativeTo to think it's specifically tailored to that (while others state it isn't). I can live with that. I'm not entirely happy with its privacy/data collection policy, but it could be worse. (The site's admin does consider requests for such information to be deleted, although makes no promises that it will decide in favour of the requester if certain conditions are met.)

Note: There are also the options of Freelancer Club and Art Wanted, which seem to be targeted at professional artists looking for freelance work. I don't consider myself at that level, since what I'm doing is mucking around with AI to generate art for me, not on commission.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that CREA is a defunct cryptocurrency no longer in use, Creary looks like my best best if I can direct people off site to my NFTs on OpenSea. Weasyl also looks like a contender. All the other Websites have some fatal flaw that puts me off wanting to use them. It's not necessarily that they're Web2, but show problems typically associated with it.

On an unrelated side note: I tried the free version of Proton VPN today. It allows me to choose from one of only four countries (as opposed to however many the first paid tier offers), excluding Spain and the United Kingdom. When I am connected, it prevents me from using the Web. That's not at all good, not by a fireman's hat. I think I'll stick to Mullvard and Nord.

Three hours later ...

I now have a profile on Weasyl. I'm just waiting for the site admin/support staff to verify and activate it, then I should be good to go.

Great White Snark
Great White Snark

I'm currently seeking fixed employment as a S/W & Web developer (C# & ASP .NET MVC, PHP 8+, Python 3), hoping to stash the farmed fiat and go full Crypto, quit the 07:30-18:00 grind. Unsigned music producer; snarky; white; balding; smashes Patriarchy.

SW/Web developer: ~12 years of C# (yay!) & ASP .Net MVC, Java (blargh!), Python (woot!) experience. I'm currently hitting faucets and writing for crypto to stake/invest . | I work part-time with animals. Sadly, my cerebellum and medulla oblongata aren't Einsteinian in proportion. However, I possess a Brobdingnagian vocabulary and get by with being a barbigerous logophile. I can probably write you into bed, if smashing Capitalism and Patriarchy turns you on. Kink is political!
