Don't ask what the country can do for you, ask what you can do for the country, is one of the dumbest quotes that I ever heard, and my sentiment towards it can be understood only by someone who has lived even for a few years under Communism. Doing almost everything for the country/community, and too less for you as an individual, could become exhausting and meaningless quite easy, when actually making it a reality.

However, whether we admit it or not, like it or not, the countries that we were born into and live in, have quite a lot of power on our lives and free will, and although self asked euthanasia is possible in some countries around the world, like in Switzerland from what I remember, you can't ask to be killed anywhere on the map, that being not only immoral but illegal as well for many countries .

I just finished watching a two hours long podcast of a famous stand-up comedian in our country and a very talented and famous actor, and the actor was telling the story of a very good friend of his that ended at some point critically ill and in hospital, and while being just the two of them in the hospital room, the old guy asked him to overdose him with sleeping pills if he ever gets to suffer too much, and asks for it, and life wouldn't be worth living anymore.

In Romania human euthanasia is not being practiced and who knows if it will ever become a reality. I guess it is tied to our strong christian convictions and seeing such an act as suicide, no one even thought about it or propose it to become legal. I guess that being a corrupt country it could have been abused as well, but being under constant excruciating pain for long time at some point in life, or lets say by the end of it, some of us would rather prefer to end it.

The man that was on his dying bed never benefited from his wished amateur euthanasia to escape the living hell he was drowning into although asked for it, because his younger friend didn't had the guts to do it, and not because he would feared being accused of murder, because in that state the dying person was nobody would make any autopsy and simply declare him dead as the cause being the terminating illness, but when detaching oneself from religious views, legal framework and what is or isn't moral, I guess we should all have the turn off button at hand during such times.

If we have the right to be born, to live, the right to work, make babies, drink, get sick, vote, stay inside during a pandemic and so on, why we don't have the right to die... Why?

I guess because we're still living the old paths, so to speak, and we are still chained by old and dated moral principles and laws, and because no one on a dying bed has ever voted a law, or should at least propose such kind of law, because dying people usually don't get too much decision rights anymore. Ultimately though, God given or not, one's life is one's life and we should all decide what we do with it and whether we would cut the cords a bit sooner... or not.

I know that this type of topic is not the one that you would open at a dinner party or near Christmas Eve but we have to accept that we somehow refuse to overcome our limited moral, religious and even philosophical conditions, and we don't open this topic not even in philosophy class. It's some sort of a fake taboo that should be addressed and dealt with.

If we have the right to euthanize a suffering pet, purely based on the suffering that he endures, why we're not able to do that for ourselves. Yes, there might be cases when some would probably use it before that unbearable point, but again...if we have access to alcohol, cigarettes, and other silent killers why don't we have access to that switch...

The right to die should be a given as well as the right to live is, but the way I see it, neither are fully under our control. Our rights and freedom are being constricted by the day, and even when life becomes truly a burden we can't decide for us anymore, so what freedom are we actually talking about when we refer to it?
