Pohela Boishakh (1st date of Boishakh, the first month of the Bengali calendar) is the first day of the Bengali year, i.e. the Bengali New Year.

The day is celebrated with special festivities as New Year in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India. Bengalis living in Tripura also take part in this festival. As such, it is considered as a universal folk festival of Bengalis. According to the Gregorian calendar, the first Baishakh is celebrated on 14th April or 15th April.

** According to the Hindu solar calendar, Bengali twelve months were celebrated long ago. This solar calendar began in the Gregorian calendar in mid-April. The first day of the Hindu solar year has long been celebrated as an integral part of the culture of Assam, Bengal, Kerala, Manipur, Nepal, Orissa, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Tripura. Now, as the New Year has become a universal celebration of the beginning of the new year, it was not at one time. At that time New Year or Pahela Baishakh was celebrated as Artab Utsav or seasonal festival. Its main significance then was agriculture, as farmers had to rely on the seasons until the era of technological application began.

** After the establishment of the Mughal Empire in India, the emperors collected rents of agricultural products according to the Hijri calendar. But since the Hijri year is dependent on the moon, it does not match the agricultural yield. This forced the farmers to pay rent at an inopportune time. The Mughal emperor Akbar introduced the Bengali year with the aim of making the collection of rent fair. He originally ordered reforms to the ancient calendar. At the behest of the emperor, Fatehullah Siraj, the famous astronomer and thinker of Bengal at that time, based the rules of the new Bengali year on the solar year and the Arabic Hijri year.

** The Bengali year reckoning started from 10th March or 11th March 1584 AD. However, this method of calculation was implemented from the time of Akbar's accession to the throne (November 5, 1556). At first this year was called the crop year, later it was known as "Bangabda" or Bengali year.

** The celebration of Pahela Baishakh started from the time of Akbar. At that time everyone was obliged to pay all rents, dues and duties by the last day of the month of Bangla Chaitra. On the following day, the first Baishakh, the landowners used to entertain the inhabitants of their respective areas with sweets.

** Various festivals were organized on this occasion. The festival turned into a social event which has changed its form and is now at this stage. The main event of the day at that time was to make a halakhata. Halkhata means a new book of accounts. In fact, halakhata is the process of formally updating the shop accounts on the first day of the Bengali year.

** In rural, urban or commercial areas, old accounts are closed and new accounts are opened. On the day of Halkhata, shopkeepers entertain their customers with sweets. This practice is still prevalent in many places, especially in gold shops.

** The first news of modern New Year celebrations was received in 1918. Home kirtan and puja were arranged on the first Baishakh of that year to wish victory to the British in the First World War.

** Then in 1938 similar activities are mentioned. Later, the practice of celebrating the first Baishakh, which took place before 1966, did not become very popular.

** In the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, the focal point of the main event of the first Boishakh is the call of the new year sun through the concert of the cultural organization Chayanat. After sunrise on the first Baishakh, the artists of Chayanat sang in unison and called for the new year.

** Although the place is known as a bot root, in fact the tree in the shade of which the stage is made is not a bot tree, but an ash tree. Chayanat's New Year celebrations began in 1966 in protest of the oppression and cultural terrorism of the Pakistani regime in the 1980s.

** Isha Khan's Sonargaon hosts an exceptional fair called Baumela, also known locally as "Battala Mela". The people of Jayrampur village think that this fair, which started on the first Baishakh for almost 100 years, lasts for five days. The fair sits under an ancient banyan tree, although followers of traditional religions gather here to worship Goddess Siddheswari.

** Especially virgins, brides and even mothers come to this fair in the hope of fulfilling their desires. Fans offer seasonal fruits with Sandesh-Sweet-Paddy Durbar. The tradition of goat sacrifice is also old. The turn of the old worship is changing. Now the devotees want to get the message of peace from the goddess by flying pigeons.

** Besides, another fair was organized near Perab village of Sonargaon police station. Its name is Ghoramela. A popular man named Jamini Sadhak used to come on horseback and give prasad to everyone on this New Year's day and after his death a memorial was erected at that place.
** Every year on the first day of Boishakh, the followers of traditional religions keep one earthen horse at the memorial and a fair is organized here. For this reason, the popular fair is called Ghoramela.

** One of the attractions of this fair is that khichuri is cooked on the boat and everyone, young and old, eats it happily on banana leaves. People have been coming to this place since morning. Children and teenagers are anxious to come to the fair from morning. The one-day fair has been frozen since noon.

** Thousands of people gathered. However, the fair is organized due to the followers of traditional religions. However, people of all religions predominate in this fair. The fair is crowded with children and teenagers. The fair includes merry-go-rounds, puppet dances and circuses. Kirtan is added in a new dimension to alleviate the fatigue of the fair when the western sky is adorned with red lights and the people are very tired.

** This kirtan is till midnight. This is how this traditional fair of Boishakh ends.

# New Year in Chittagong

** DC Hill Park is the main center of the first Baishakh festival in the port city of Chittagong. Every year, a two-day event is organized by the Sammilita Sangskritik Jote to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new year. In addition to various cultural events, there are various rural products on the open stage. There is also a system of panta hilsa.

** Initiatives to jointly celebrate the first Baishakh in Chittagong In 1973, 1984 and 1985, the event was organized at the foot of the Ispahani Hills with the efforts of politicians.

** On the next day, that is, on the holy day of Boishakh, the custom of bowing to the elders after bathing is prevalent in every family. Confectionery is eaten at home and in all business establishments. Most of the business establishments from this day onwards open a new account of their business account, which is called Halkhata. In rural areas and on the outskirts of the city of Calcutta, the Baishakhi Mela starts from the holy Baishakh. This fair is held throughout the month of Baishakh.

** There, various traders have been waiting since dawn to start halakhata by offering puja to the goddess. Apart from traders, many householders also go to Kalighat to seek the blessings of the goddess for the welfare of the family. On this day the traditional dress of Bengalis is dhoti-Punjabi and sari.
