Sony Playstation 5: New Dualsense controller looks like a spaceship

Simple is out: The gamepad for Playstation 5 will be two-coloured and futuristic.

This could also set the tone for the console's design.

Sony has shown first photos of the new controller for the Playstation 5. The "Dualsense" replaces the Dualshock 4: It is available in black and white and now has two light strips flanking the central touchpad. Compared to the traditional Dualshock design, the Dualsense looks much more experimental.

More Curvy than its predecessor

In order not to disturb the color composition of black, white and blue LED elements, Sony also dispenses with colored highlighting of the square, triangle, cross and circle keys in the Dualsense. On previous controller models, each of these buttons had its own colour, but on the Playstation 5 controller they are all light grey. Whether Sony will also offer a traditional color variation of the Dualsense is not known.

The new controller appears more curvy than its predecessor, especially the handles remind in their form of the Xbox-One gamepads. Moreover, Sony has changed the angle of the shoulder buttons according to the blog entry for the controller, they now sit slightly slanted.

Haptic feedback and dynamic triggers

Behind the visual gimmicks is the well-known layout: The two sticks are still symmetrically arranged - the most important difference between Playstation and Xbox controllers. Next to the touchpad, the option and share buttons are still placed. This share key will be called "Create" in the upcoming dual sense, Sony doesn't reveal yet which software changes this will involve.

A new button can also switch the microphone on and off, which Sony is now installing directly in the controller for the first time. Like its predecessor, the Dualsense is powered by a built-in rechargeable battery, which can now be charged via USB-C.

The new features of the Dualsense have been known since the initial announcement of the PS5: Revised vibration motors are to provide better haptic feedback. The lower shoulder buttons ("Trigger") can now also dynamically adjust their resistance. For example, they can become somewhat more unruly the more a virtual bow is stretched.

OFFICIAL PS5 CONTROLLER REVEAL

Appearance of the PS5 not yet known

Because of the Dualsense's futuristic design, it's likely that the actual PS5 console will also be visually upgraded - a black and white body with blue LED elements seems obvious. Sony still hasn't shown any photos of the Playstation 5, though. All pictures circulating on the net of the PS5 show the developer kit, which will probably have nothing to do with the final look.

Competitor Microsoft, on the other hand, has already shown the Xbox Series X: it is cuboid in shape and reminds one of a small PC as one could put it on the desk. In the color scheme - dark gray to black with green trim elements - the Series X appears quite traditional.
