3D Modeling in Blender
Game development has always required big teams of staff with various roles. With the availability of software such as Photoshop and Blender though, indie developers are finding it easier, and less time consuming to fully develop their own games.
Unlike software such as Photoshop, and Gimp however, Blender allows the user to make highly detailed, as well as simplistic, 3D models. This makes it much easier when developing the actions and interactions that the playable character can perform, or do, as the model can be animated to perform these actions by "rigging" the models. Rigging is essentially giving the 3D model a skeleton that is weighted to the body, meaning that, for example, when the elbow is moved, the wrist, and hand will also move with it.

As well as animations for the actions performed by the model, you can also develop different items for the character that appear in game when they are equipped. Due to the fact that you can see everything alongside the character during development, it allows the developer to make more realistic seeming animations, ultimately giving the game a more professional feel.
