Raiding in Guild of Guardians

By Bayrd | Future of Gaming | 23 Oct 2021

*Note: All of this is subject to change. Guild of Guardians is being actively developed and the development team is constantly seeking out new and better ways to do things. This article reflects the mechanics as they currently stand in pre-alpha.

Raiding will be a part of Guild of Guardians! We first heard official mention of it from Developer Josiah recently when he mentioned it in passing on Discord, and then we received confirmation when the Guild of Guardians Diaries, issue 3 was released. But what are raids? And what does this all mean for players?

Raids in Guild of Guardians

According to the Guild of Guardians Diary:

Raids are 16 player async boss battles that are organized by Guild Leadership and provide players with unique rewards that are crucial to things like crafting and power progression.

Raids will be performed by 16 guild members contributing one hero each to the task. The party of 16 heroes then sets out to complete the raid, this is all handles asynchronously; the leader sets up the raid, members join, the raid begins, and after a cooldown, the raid is complete and members receive their rewards. Raiding, like crafting, is a Guild of Guardians activity that may only be performed by a guild.

Let’s break down what we know into three stage, pre-raid, raid, and post-raid.

Pre-raid

This is the point where a guild leader will set up the raid. At this point, guild members will contribute heroes to the raid; only 16 guild members will be able to do this. For a smaller guild, like an adventurer’s guild with 20 members this could be a challenge. Raids are set up to require 16 members and it is unclear if a raid can start with fewer than 16.

For larger guilds, 16 members may be too few. There may be well more than 16 players wanting to get involved and reap the rewards. Luckily, though, a player can participate in a raid by contributing heroes, and also by contributing supplies to the raid team. Guild members can contribute supplies, like consumable items, to the raid and participate without contributing heroes. While we know that those that contribute items in lieu of heroes will participate in the rewards, we don’t know how that will be measured in terms of contribution and what kind of rewards will be received as of yet. Players will be able to contribute both heroes and supplies to the raid.

The raid UI (as seen above) will recommend a party composition and suggest a minimum power level for taking on the raid. It will also provide some insight into how well the team is prepared for the raid. While there will be a random element in victory/defeat, the assessment made by the UI should be significantly accurate to help your team succeed.

Raid

The raid itself is idle and will have a timer that lets you know when your heroes will complete their task. This means that a player does not need to be actively involved or even present; an AFK guild member will not change the outcome of a raid. Contributing heroes to the raid will not tie them up and prevent you from using them while doing other tasks in game.

Once the timer is up, your heroes are done! Defeat stings, while victory means loot! In either case, a raid chance will be consumed. Each guild is limited to a certain number of raids within a specific time period (all to be determined). Time management in raiding will be key!

Post-Raid

Everyone loves loot, and raiding is going to provide important loot for the guild and its members. First and foremost, it bears repeating that those that contributed heroes and those that contribute supplies will be rewarded, and it seems that the rewards will be different.

One of the most important reasons to raid is that raids provide recipes for crafting. These recipes are necessary for guilds to perform guild crafting and create equipment and gear that will be sold in the marketplace. As such, raiding will be an invaluable activity for guilds to participate in.

After the timer expires and the heroes return from their quest, guild members will receive a video of the raid. This will be an important tool for guild leaders and members to review and analyze. It will be of strategic value so that in future raids the team can make better decisions about which heroes to send into the raid and what supplies are needed.

So, what does this all mean for players?

Raids open up another way for guilds to differentiate themselves and to compete. Guild of Guardians will be creating raid leaderboards to facilitate healthy intra-guild competition. Raiding offers up new strategic elements to the game and allows guild members another way to interact with each other.
