Which Blockchains Could Be Used For CBDCs?

Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) will be used in major countries in the coming years, whether we like it or not. Therefore, it might be worth betting on the blockchains which could be used for CBDCs:

1) Bitcoin (BTC)

Bitcoin could be used for CBDCs. However, the exact details of how this would work would depend on the particular centralized authority implementing the CBDC. Bitcoin is a decentralized system and would need to be modified to fit the requirements of a centralized system such as a CBDC.

Countries that have tested Bitcoin for CBDCs include the Bahamas, Canada, Ecuador, Estonia, Japan, the Marshall Islands, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Uruguay.

2) Ethereum (ETH)

Ethereum could potentially be used for CBDCs. Ethereum's blockchain technology is well-suited for this purpose due to its ability to support smart contracts, facilitate transactions, and provide a secure platform for digital currencies. Ethereum-based CBDCs would have the potential to streamline payments, reduce costs, and promote financial inclusion.

The countries that have tested Ethereum for CBDCs include Japan, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Other countries such as Canada, France, South Korea, and Singapore are also reportedly exploring the use of Ethereum for CBDCs.

3) Polygon (MATIC)

Polygon could be used for CBDCs. Polygon is a layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum, and it is well-suited for financial applications like CBDCs. It enables faster, cheaper and more secure transactions, which makes it attractive for CBDCs. Additionally, Polygon provides features such as identity management, data privacy, and compliance, which are important for CBDCs.

Countries that have tested Polygon for CBDCs include Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Brazil.

4) Cosmos (ATOM)

Cosmos can be used for CBDCs. Cosmos is a blockchain-based platform that is interoperable, secure, and scalable, making it an ideal platform for issuing and managing CBDCs. Cosmos also supports smart contracts, making it possible to develop and deploy decentralized applications (dApps) that can be used to facilitate transactions with CBDCs. Additionally, it offers a range of tools that can be used to develop and manage CBDCs in a secure and efficient manner.

Several countries have tested or are testing the use of Cosmos for CBDCs, including Japan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and the Bahamas. In addition, the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, and the Bank of Canada are all exploring the use of Cosmos for CBDCs.

5) Avalanche (AVAX)

Avalanche can be used for CBDCs. It is a blockchain platform that is designed to enable the development of digital assets and digital asset exchanges. It is also an open-source platform that provides secure and efficient infrastructure for issuing and managing digital assets, including CBDCs. Avalanche is also equipped with a range of features that make it well-suited for CBDCs, such as its low latency, high throughput, and high security.

Avalanche has been tested for CBDCs in Singapore, the United States, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Conclusion

Most of the major existing blockchains have already been tested for CBDCs, and different ones have sometimes be tested by the same countries. Therefore, it is challenging to guess which ones will be selected at the end. Furthermore, the list above is not exhaustive. We could also mention Ripple, Quant and private or consortium blockchains built on Hyperledger Fabric, Quorum or R3 Corda.
