Crypto War

Crypto War - Which Ones Will Survive?

By Bfab | Good vibes | 24 Dec 2022

Most of the cryptos that exist today, like Ethereum (ETH) or Solana (SOL) did not exist ten years ago. Some of them will disappear in the next ten years. Before jumping into this topic, it is crucial to understand the difference between a coin and a token.

What is the difference between a coin and a token?

A coin is a type of cryptocurrency that has its own blockchain, like Bitcoin (BTC), meaning it is not built on top of another blockchain like a token is. Coins are generally used as a medium of exchange, and most coins have their own dedicated blockchain and cryptocurrency. Tokens, on the other hand, are built on top of an existing blockchain, such as Ethereum, and are used to represent an asset or utility. Tokens are usually used to represent an asset, such as a company or product, in a digital form that can be exchanged and traded on a cryptocurrency platform.

How can a crypto coin disappear?

A crypto coin can disappear if its network is compromised or if its development team abandons the project. For example, if the developers stop maintaining the code and the network is no longer secure, the coin could lose its value and become worthless. Additionally, if the developers are not transparent and accountable, the coin may become unreliable and investors may lose trust in it, causing its value to decrease drastically.

How can a crypto token disappear?

A crypto token can disappear if it loses its value in the market, either due to the lack of demand or the failure of the project or the team behind the token. Additionally, if the underlying protocol of the token is changed or the blockchain is hard forked, the token may become obsolete and disappear.

Examples of cryptos which have disappeared

1. Coinye: Launched in 2014, Coinye was a cryptocurrency based on the likeness of American rapper Kanye West. The coin quickly gained popularity, but was shut down after a legal battle with West's legal team.

2. CryptoRush: CryptoRush was a digital currency launched in 2014. It was used as a payment system for online gaming, but its developers abandoned the project in 2017.

3. Cryptogenic Bullion: Cryptogenic Bullion was a digital currency designed to mimic the properties of gold. It was launched in 2013, but its developers ceased their support for the currency in 2017.

4. LeafCoin: LeafCoin was a digital currency launched in 2014. It was designed to be used as a payment system for marijuana-related businesses, but its developers abandoned the project in 2017.

Which cryptos could disappear in the next ten years?

Any cryptocurrency that is not widely adopted by the public, has a weak development team, or fails to provide a viable use case may be at risk of disappearing in the next decade. Examples of such cryptos include Byteball, DigiByte, Namecoin and PotCoin. Although it is unlikely that bigger cryptos like Ripple (XRP) or DogeCoin (DOGE) disappear, it mostly depends on the support of developers and companies backing these projects. Nothing is too big to fail...
