People who enjoy reading and writing can settle for little: some good books and, of course, a computer to write. Or pens and paper, a lot of paper. Please understand me: it's not that we have to live a limited life, I'm just trying to say that we can be happy with things as simple as these.
If you check the newspaper articles you will see the great writers in their world, surrounded by books and with a machine nearby. It could not be otherwise. That is our passion. So this is the point. How much do you like to read and write?
Publishing is not what makes us writers, but the enormous attraction, if not love, that we feel for the activity.
My literary teacher was a person who loved books, loved to write, loved literature. I have never met anyone who had such a devotion to literature as him. He had written more than 70,000 aphorisms. However, he had only published one book. Did that make him less of a writer than others with more published books? Of course not.
Every morning he wrote his aphorisms on the hood and on the doors of his car. It took him three hours to write it. He had to kneel, stoop, do real pirouettes to complete his mobile book. I don't know if I told you that he wrote with chalk, that's why when he rained his car cried "chalk tears". He was a teacher of teachers, not because someone like me was his disciple; when I came to him, he had barely started my stories. Jose Narovsky himself, who at that time was a famous writer of phrases and aphorisms, called him Master and asked for his advice.
There are certain people who physically disappear, but with the passage of time they become more and more important.
He is one of them. He was dedicated to selling encyclopedic books and you went through the offices and ministries carrying those heavy books that people paid for in easy installments, while his car was parked and people came to read what he had written.
When he toured the offices he gave away loose sheets with phrases that were a hymn to life. I insist, I did not meet anyone like him. I have with me several encyclopedias that he gave me. You should read his dedications! The letters he sent me, encouraging me to never stop writing. The true monuments are not those that are in the squares, but those that we have built in our hearts.
If you Google his name, you will see that there is practically no information. In his day, the Internet was not on anyone's mind. But I assure you that he was an extraordinary person, an extraordinary human being. That is why I say that a writer is not more or less a writer because of the number of books that he has published, but because of the time he dedicates to this trade or art or whatever you want to call it. That is the measure of success. Or rather, of success beyond success. Because the success that society proposes to us is a superficial success. It has to do with the external, with how much we are capable of obtaining. What we are talking about here is how much we are capable of giving.
So what if I can post and I'm doing well and I'm a bestseller? Marvelous! Enjoy it. There is nothing wrong with it, on the contrary, it is to celebrate. You have surely created value. But even so and all this will be temporary. The most notable writers flee from the press, from the cameras, because they want to be alone, abstracted, practicing their trade, sweetening their lives.
The fame, the money, the awards are still peripheral. Writing is the essence. Reading the teachers is the essence. Progress is the essence.
