Bad Love Song

It would be interesting to de-romanticize the word romanticize. I have noticed that it is used frequently in that sense: but I do not know why. I know that words arise, develop, mutate: this ability to create meanings in a word is known as Stipulation. But the matter is still striking.

One walks down the street and suddenly hears the anathema "well, but don't romanticize this thing or the other", one walks through social networks and reads long and indignant texts that say, for example, "let's stop romanticizing such a thing or the other. other". And, surely I am wrong, it is used with a sense of a Bad Love Song, a junk rhythm of a stupid sentimentality: a kind of nostalgia for something that does not deserve it, perhaps.

The problem, if there is one (because all this is nothing more than a writing exercise), is this: "romanticizing" lost, a long time ago, its metaphorical force, and dyed itself with a weak, labile, labial romanticization: his sense slides out of his mouth like an already harmless and complaining drool.

What happened between the origin of the word, back in the 18th century, and its current use? I do not know, but it is striking that a concept that was born as a reaction to the arrogance of Reason is used today in the everyday world as a pseudo-synonym of deconstruction (another concept that has already lost all its revolutionary freshness, because words are used , and when they are spent they lose their strength, their value), but - it seems to me - without their philosophical and flawed tone - the word - of an Interesting Community Self-Help Idea. Canchera, a word that surpasses all that can be criticized in this world of infinite pluralities.

When a word becomes a concept it helps to think and one can use it as a spear to undermine the unwanted walls of reality; But when that word no longer has an edge, when its revolutionary connotation has vanished - from so much use -, the opposite happens: the word helps not to think. You name it, you leave it on the table like an old, worn glove. That everyone looks at, understands, accepts, but no one puts it on: because the word that helps not to think also provides a comfortable place: not doing, or worse: believing that one is doing.

If we were able to tear the word Romantize from the current lap-sense, if we stopped pampering it like a kitten already domesticated, and created another meaning for it or, better yet, if we could bring another concept, sharper, perhaps we could de-romanticize the word romanticize. and go back to speaking with sharper words. More beautiful, more philosophical. That is to say: true thought-generating words.
