Re-drawing masculinity Figure Drawing Workshop

By DoctorPlatypus | Doctor Platypus | 25 Oct 2020

I just participated in a very fun, very relaxed online figure drawing workshop called Re-Drawing Masculinity that focused on drawing male models. We warmed up with six 2-minute poses, then six 3-minute poses, then moved on to draw four 10-minute poses and two 15-minute poses. The moderators served as models; although participants were invited to pose as well, none of us took advantage of that option this time. We were given the opportunity to display our work, and the moderators were very encouraging. It was a very cool way to spend a few hours this afternoon. Here is the better of my drawings from the 15 minute poses:

For comparison, here is the best of my 2-minute drawing:

It's fun to see how much detail you can get during a 2-minute warm up, but I must say I feel better with a longer time...

The other students, some of them, got a lot more detail in than I was able to, but I think they have been drawing a lot longer than I have - I suspect they are sufficiently-practiced to skip steps like "draw a triangle for the torso" etc. and can get right down to drawing the most important contour lines right off the bat. And that's actually fine - I will surely get there with practice, which is why I took the workshop in the first place.

Anyhow, if you're looking for a friendly, fun, inclusive workshop, you could do a lot worse than this one. Don't expect a lot of instruction - there was a quick overview of the VERY basics of gesture drawing and breaking a figure into shapes, but when we showed our sketches the feedback was uniformly encouraging and positive, not so much aimed at how to improve as aimed at making sure we continue drawing. Lots of "oh! that's wonderful" etc.

So if you're looking for a critical eye, look elsewhere; If you're looking for a practice space with great guys, this is pretty awesome.
