Today I saw a picture of someone swimming, and the painter had rendered the underwater portions of the figure in a slightly different color than the portions above the water. I thought "I bet I can do that" so today I challenged myself to try it out, and here's the exercise I drew:

I think the shading could be more nuanced, and the water itself is pretty sketched-in, but as an initial proof of concept, I am pretty happy. I think it does read as though the lower legs are submerged. I was briefly worried that the calves seem very small relative to the thighs, but in hindsight I think that's appropriate for submerged calves - water will distort the way they look in terms of size and angle both.
I need to really focus on how to draw water itself, so that in the future I can use this technique with more realistic water.
