Lalo leaning on a block - 5 minute timed pencil sketch

Figure Drawing Workshop: The Male Form - Lalo

By DoctorPlatypus | Doctor Platypus | 3 Mar 2021

I participated today in a figure drawing workshop hosted by a third group, The Male Form, with talented and creative model Lalo. We drew a few 5-minute warm-up sketches, then several longer poses.

Here's one of the 15-minute poses that I think came out pretty well:

I got a chance to think about how to draw hair in layers, which of course I still have lots of work to do on that skill, but he had great hair for practicing. I also like how his face came out, mostly, although his eyes are not quite so gargantuan in real life. I need to work on eye haha. I am pretty happy with the shading I got in, although there's always more work to be done there.

Here's my series of 5-minute warm-ups:

Lalo in three poses - 5 minute timed pencil sketches

I guess it shouldn't surprise me that the third one is the one I think came out best. I was starting to be warmed up, spent less time trying to capture the wrong information, etc. I think that third one captures the energy of his pose pretty well. I wish I had not tried to draw his face in the first one. I could I think more profitably spent that time shading his abdomen and legs. In all of today's sketches I tried to capture the energy and placement of the feet, and of these three I think that worked out best in the middle sketch.

Here are the 10 minute sketches:

Spent less time on his face, and his face looks better in this one. #irony. I didn't quite manage to capture that he was leaning backward.

I think the right-hand sketch came out pretty great, especially the feet and even hands. I wouldn't mind having more time to work on shading.

Here's the remaining 15-minute pose:

This one was a great opportunity to practice foreshortening, and I didn't quite pull it off. Again, in this pose he was leaning back pretty far, so I think his torso needs to be a bunch shorter. I like the way his hair and feet came out, and I did manage to capture the sideways lean to some extent. I think a little shading could emphasize that further, but the backward lean is a lost opportunity unless I do another picture.

In the twenty-minute pose, the model got a bit aroused, and I am not sure whether it's ok to post that here, so I won't. But it's in my Instagram if you're interested in seeing that pose. I like how it came out for the most part, but again there I failed to capture his backward lean.

Thanks for looking at my pictures!
