Read a lot about how wonderful MagicSchool.ai is, and found time to try it out for myself. Specifically tried out the #lessonplangenerator.

My prompt

You and your classmates arrive in school, only to find your teacher missing. He left a note, saying that he wants to try out another job. The success criteria of this lesson is understand how to use the “-er” and “-or” suffixes to turn people into professions. You must solve three puzzles aimed for you to learn the “-er” and “-or” suffixes. Suggest three suitable puzzles for 7-grade students to learn these suffixes and find their teacher!

MagicSchool AI’s response

Title: Exploring Professions with Suffixes "-er" and "-or"

Objective:
Students will be able to understand how to use the “-er” and “-or” suffixes to turn people into professions.

Assessment:
Students will complete three puzzles aimed at identifying professions using the “-er” and “-or” suffixes.

Key Points:
- Understanding the purpose of suffixes "-er" and "-or"
- Identifying professions using the suffixes
- Applying the correct suffix to create professions
- Differentiating between the uses of "-er" and "-or"

Opening:
As students arrive, they find a note from their missing teacher, challenging them to solve puzzles to find him in his new profession. The class will discuss what they know about suffixes and brainstorm professions commonly associated with the suffixes "-er" and "-or". The Do Now will consist of questions such as "What do you know about suffixes?" and "Can you think of any professions that end with '-er' or '-or'?"

Introduction to New Material:
The teacher will lead a discussion on the purpose of suffixes and their use in creating professions. A common misconception to anticipate is that all professions can be formed using both "-er" and "-or" suffixes.

Guided Practice:
Students will work in pairs to solve the puzzles, with the teacher providing guidance and examples to scaffold their understanding. The teacher will monitor student performance through questioning and observation.

Independent Practice:
Students will complete an assignment where they identify and create professions using the suffixes "-er" and "-or".

Closing:
To summarize the lesson, students will share their answers to the puzzles, identifying the professions formed by the suffixes "-er" and "-or".

Suggested Differentiation:
For students behind grade level, provide additional examples and offer visual aids to support their understanding of suffixes. Encourage peer support for struggling students.

Extension Activity:
For early finishers, students can create their own puzzles using the suffixes "-er" and "-or" for their classmates to solve.

Homework:
Students will be tasked with finding 10 professions that use the suffix "-er" and 10 professions that use the suffix "-or" and write a short description of each.

Standards Addressed:
- Singapore GCE O Level English: Demonstrate understanding of the use of English language features, including grammar and vocabulary
- Singapore GCE O Level English: Apply knowledge of language features to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts

3 great things about MagicSchool AI
- Liked that the lesson plan incorporates the Gradual Release of Responsibility, as illustrated by the headings Introduction to New Material, Guided Practice and Independent Practice. This keeps me on my toes and reminds me of the need to scaffold my students properly.
- Liked that it surfaced a misconception for me to dispell. I was reminded that I could let students be aware of other similar suffixes (e.g. librarian, scientist) so that they know words denoting professions don’t just come from “-er” and “-or”.
- Liked its holistic nature as it suggests ways to engage high-progress and low-progress students, as well as a homework task. This shows that the lesson isn’t the be-all and end-all of learning.

2 areas for improvement
- As my prompt specifically asked for puzzles, it would be good if the lesson plan could suggest various activities that might be of use in this lesson, such as word scramble puzzles and fill-in-the-blank sentences
- It would be better if the details of the assignment meant to be used for Independent Practice could be fleshed out so that teachers know exactly the formative assessments that they could deploy to test their students’ understanding,

1 verdict
- I think it’s useful for new teachers who don’t quite know how to fill up one hour with activities. Magic School AI concretises a lesson with its detailed flow.
- For teachers who seek ideas for activities, I have to say that ChatGPT 3.5 provides several specific activities, which will set your creative juices flowing.

Just my perspective. Maybe you have a different experience with MagicSchool AI.
