In the evening (9:00 PM EST, October 8, 2024) "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery" (HBO) will be broadcast, which should reveal the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto (the name behind the Bitcoin network). Of course, this will only be speculation because to prove that those addresses belong to the person mentioned, one would have to sign the transaction with the private keys or move some satoshis. The genesis block (the first) of the Bitcoin blockchain contains a particular message inserted by Satoshi Nakamoto:
"The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks"
This is the title of an article published by the British newspaper The Times on January 3, 2009. Satoshi inserted this sentence in the coinbase field of the transaction in the genesis block, which is usually used by miners to insert some arbitrary data. This message seems to be a symbolic statement about the world economic situation at the time, especially in reference to the 2008 financial crisis and government bailouts of banks.
The word "Coinbase" is a technical term used to indicate the first transaction in a block, which awards the miner the reward for creating the block. In this specific case of the genesis block, the coinbase transaction was special, as the coins (the first 50 BTC) were never spendable. Satoshi Nakamoto does not have a single address but several addresses associated with the first blocks mined in the Bitcoin network. One of the most famous addresses is:
1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa
This is the address linked to the first Coinbase transaction in the Bitcoin blockchain, which generated a reward of 50 BTC, even though these BTC were never spent. It is estimated that Satoshi has around 1 million BTC, distributed among various addresses.
WHO IS SATOSHI NAKAMOTO?
There have been many theories and names over the years, however, as it has never been objectively proven, it has always been simple speculation. The inventor of Bitcoin has probably been dead for years. If you had billions of dollars in BTC, would you leave them sitting on addresses without spending them? Quite fascinating to believe so much in your own creation, but unlikely.
Who are the suspects? Keep in mind that some of these names have denied being Nakamoto or are unlikely, however they are mentioned for completeness.
✅Adam Back: Creator of Hashcash, a system similar to the one used by Bitcoin.
✅Nick Szabo: Creator of Bit Gold, a precursor to the Bitcoin network.
✅Phil Zimmermann: Creator of PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), an encryption software, with ties to the cypherpunk movement and Bitcoin.
✅Len Sassaman (deceased, 2011): Cryptographer and privacy activist, close to the cypherpunk world.
✅Dave Kleiman (deceased, 2013): Security and computer forensics expert, suspected for his technical skills.
✅Hal Finney (deceased, 2014): First to receive a Bitcoin transaction from Nakamoto's address.
✅John Nash (deceased, 2015): Famous mathematician and Nobel Prize winner in economics, suspected for his economic and cryptographic theories.
✅Tim May (deceased, 2018): Founder of the cypherpunk movement and author of the "Crypto Anarchist Manifesto", had the philosophical and technical skills to imagine Bitcoin.
✅Dan Kaminsky (deceased, 2021): Famous cybersecurity researcher, analyzed the Bitcoin code and suspected that Satoshi could be a group of people.
✅Paul Le Roux (in prison): Programmer and criminal (cartel boss), suspected for his technical skills.
✅Craig Wright: Claims to be Satoshi, but has never been able to prove it and the court has ruled against him. Creator of the Bitcoin SV (Bitcoin Cash fork).
✅Dorian Nakamoto: Coincidence of name, but has denied any involvement.
✅Wei Dai: Creator of b-money, a precursor to Bitcoin.

✅Gavin Andresen: Lead developer of Bitcoin after Nakamoto.
✅Jed McCaleb: Stellar CTO, founder of Mt.Gox and Ripple, involved in cryptocurrency for a long time.
✅Shinichi Mochizuki: Mathematician with the skills to create Bitcoin.
✅Gavin Wood: Co-founder of Ethereum and Polkadot Creator.
✅Vili Lehdonvirta: Economist and programmer.
✅Neal King: One of the authors of a patent that includes the term "computationally impractical to reverse", similar to phrases in the Bitcoin whitepaper.
✅Donal O'Mahony: Author of a book on electronic payment systems, potentially influential in the Bitcoin project.
✅Michael Clear: Irish cryptographer, debunked as Nakamoto after suspicions were raised in 2010.
✅Martti Malmi: An early Bitcoin contributor, who worked directly with Nakamoto.
✅Ross Ulbricht (in prison): Creator of Silk Road, a Dark Web platform that used Bitcoin in 2011, some have speculated that he could be Nakamoto. The market was blacked out in 2013, Ulbricht in 2015 received a life sentence for various crimes (drug trafficking, sale of false documents, cyber attacks, money laundering and conspiracy)
✅Jeff Garzik: An early Bitcoin developer, who contributed code.
✅Jed Dinger: Name that has emerged in some speculation, linked to the world of cypherpunk.
✅Ralph Merkle: Cryptographer with high technical skills, known for the invention of the Merkle tree.
✅Neha Narula: Director of the Digital Currency Initiative at MIT.
✅Elon Musk: Speculation based on ability to innovate, but he denied it. Meme name.
Do you think this mystery will ever be solved? Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? A single person? A team of people? Is he still alive or dead? Bitcoin protocol in its simplicity and genius is very complex. So one might think that it was created by more than one person but this theory does not fit well with the secret of anonymity. If it is more than one person it is quite unlikely that all of them have never made a single mistake of online privacy.
