To start the new year, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda released a statement regarding the companies plan heading to 2022. Unsurprisingly, just like any gaming company that is trying to take advantage the massive buzz around NFT and blockchains, they have announced that they will be creating their own "metaverse", cryptocurrency and NFTs.
Despite knowing the backlash from gamers, Square Enix still believes that NFTs will be a huge part of gaming in the future. Gamers have expressed that NFTs at this current time only have monetization use instead of being an actual feature that benefit gaming.
Yosuke Matsuda mentions:
I realize that some people who “play to have fun” and who currently form the majority of players have voiced their reservations toward these new trends, and understandably so. However, I believe that there will be a certain number of people whose motivation is to “play to contribute,” by which I mean to help make the game more exciting. Traditional gaming has offered no explicit incentive to this latter group of people, who were motivated strictly by such inconsistent personal feelings as goodwill and volunteer spirit. This fact is not unrelated to the limitations of existing UGC (user-generated content). UGC has been brought into being solely because of individuals’ desire for self-expression and not because any explicit incentive existed to reward them for their creative efforts. I see this as one reason that there haven’t been as many major game-changing content that were user generated as one would expect.
However, with advances in token economies, users will be provided with explicit incentives, thereby resulting not only in greater consistency in their motivation, but also creating a tangible upside to their creative efforts. I believe that this will lead to more people devoting themselves to such efforts and to greater possibilities of games growing in exciting ways. From having fun to earning to contributing, a wide variety of motivations will inspire people to engage with games and connect with one another. It is blockchain-based tokens that will enable this. By designing viable token economies into our games, we will enable self-sustaining game growth. It is precisely this sort of ecosystem that lies at the heart of what I refer to as “decentralized gaming,” and I hope that this becomes a major trend in gaming going forward.
What NFTs Currently Look Like In AAA Games
Online games already rely on features that the blockchain offers at the moment. Where most online games character progress, inventory, level and so on are all tracked in a secure network under your account. Most MMOs nowadays are using a security system called ArenaNet where it guarantees that nothing will happen to your account. And in an unlikely case, where your account does ended up in the wrong hands, most gaming company has a customer support that can help reverse any unwanted action.
The only enticing idea so far is that NFTs in videogames can be used in multiple different games. However, this doesn't seem very enticing at the moment. Especially that it would require a tremendous amount of effort for different game companies to rig each individual collectible NFTs into their game that doesn't really add any value at this current time.
Simply put, NFTs is an uncharted territory where people are currently making millions of dollars, thus gaming companies tries to follow where the money is -- without fully understanding the use case of the blockchain and NFTs, thus not adding any value to the use case of it. For the sake of the future of gaming, I hope an actual useful feature that the blockchain provides will be fully fleshed out and implemented properly in the near future.
