Cybersecurity will face serious problems in 2023 as the economics between attackers and defenders will drastically shift in favor of those who conduct attacks. Cybersecurity defenders will be outmatched by significant investments designed to identify ways to undermine the security of global digital systems. The high caliber research and development efforts by governments to develop offensive capabilities will filter down and across the entire digital ecosystem.
Simply put, defenders will be facing much better funded innovation and tools which create unprecedented cyber-attack capabilities, while simultaneously trying to justify their existing budgets during an economic downturn. This gives the worldwide community of attackers a significant advantage moving forward.
In 2023, the tenuous economic balance of the cybersecurity industry will be disrupted, setting the groundwork for a significant benefit to cyber attackers.
- Increased investment by nation states for offensive cyber capabilities fuels downstream attack methods across the industry which broadly target everyone
- Nation States will be more aggressive when targeting Critical Infrastructure sectors of potential adversaries around the globe. Unless an informal understanding can be met, expect more attacks that impact the daily lives of citizens
- Global economic downturn that will squeeze cybersecurity budgets, limit the ability to adapt and properly implement new capabilities, while the risks and attacks continue to rise
- Cybersecurity workloads will increase as AI and protected infrastructures will be leveraged by attackers in creative ways to increase the scale, refinement, and effectiveness of their exploits, especially as part of social engineering attack
Overall, this year will set a new tempo for attacker side innovation and the defenders must rise to the occasion and match the new pace, otherwise severe victimization will occur across critical sectors.
