Hello friends and lovers of retro video games. The game I bring you today is a hidden gem only for the bravest. It's called The Addams Family, and although it's available on various consoles, I got to enjoy it on the SNES.
This game, based on the movie of the same name, was released in 1991, and I bet more than one person scratched their heads over such a challenging video game. The premise of this game is quite simple, as with most SNES games that, beyond telling great stories (though some did), aim to give us hours of impossible challenges and superhuman skills with the controls. In the game, we step into the shoes of Gómez Addams, who must rescue his family kidnapped by the evil lawyer Tully Alford. To do so, he has to explore the Addams mansion, full of traps, enemies, and secrets.
Without a doubt, this game is one of the best platformers in the SNES catalog, with an extremely well-crafted level design for both the interiors and exteriors of the mansion. The mansion becomes another protagonist of the video game, with a complex design full of doors, entrances, and exits that turn it into a labyrinth where we will get lost, and enemies will lurk in every corner.
If you enjoyed the movie, you will surely enjoy the game. The pixel art is simply beautiful and greatly captures the atmosphere of this universe, with lovely details in the portraits of the characters. Every pixel is in its place and with perfect collision boxes, although the jumps will give us more than one headache and force us to repeat the level over and over again.
I particularly like the design and variety of enemies in this game, each with its characteristics and peculiarities, and unique ways of being defeated. And the best part: our protagonist will have a fairly extensive arsenal of weapons and powers to defeat them, from a flying hat to a fencing sword.
Each room to explore is a free choice, each maintaining its difficulty and complexity when it comes to overcoming traps and obstacles, masterfully capturing the macabre tone and peculiar humor of the Addams family.
The sound, while it sticks to the classic SNES sound, manages to make the game stand out and create a captivating atmosphere that surpasses other titles in the catalog.
If you enjoyed the series, movies, and the entire Addams universe, this game is highly recommended, expanding the universe and putting us in the family's shoes for about 4 to 6 hours to complete. A perfect option for lovers of retro, platforming, and challenges. Many may get stuck along the way due to its complexity or getting lost repeatedly without finding a way out, but I assure you they will remember the experience.
