The Room is a Thriller made in 2019 about a couple who buy a home and, outside of their knowledge, the home has a room where everything you wish for or desire comes true and, while the concept of this movie is very interesting and captivating, my wish for a complete ending was not fulfilled. Oh, maybe it's because my house doesn't have this room in it!
The Room provided the mystery aspect very well. A room in a house that will grant every wish you have? Sounds like nothing can go wrong, right? Well, turns out everything can go wrong and this movie proves it. Olga Kurylenko and Kevin Janssens stars as the couple and they put on a great show. The acting is great, that's not what is wrong with this film. You may know Olga from movies like Hitman, Max Payne and, more recently, Marvel's Black Widow and Thunderbolts, where she plays the masked assassin, Taskmaster. Her acting as always been very good, but in this movie, she plays a happy wife but also an unhappy woman, as she has suffered through severe trauma while trying to start a family. It's two extremely different ends of the emotional spectrum, but Olga does this very well, as she's proven to do throughout her filmography.
The movie is shot very well also. Christian Volckman, who, before this film, spent about 13 years directing music videos after his last film that he directed, Renaissance. There's no rust, there's no weird shot choices, it's a very well looking movie. Where my problem lies is with the script, and specifically, the last few minutes of the movie. This movie had the makings of being a cult classic, in my opinion. A house with a room where you can get everything you want? The lore of this room can go very very deep. But this film takes a very dark and unnecessary turn, which results in a very dissatisfying ending.
The ending isn't just dissatisfying from a film stand point, but from a lore standpoint. The first 3/4 of this script could have been used to supply cinephiles everywhere with a great batch of films, stories and history of this room, this house, this amazing thing that it can do. There could be prequels of the families in this house before these two. There could have been sequels that followed families after these two. You even had the path of going down the origins of the room and what witchcraft could have put that room there. But, we got what we got and while 85% of this film keeps your attention and keeps you guessing, it's the last bit that just doesn't do it for me and in my opinion, ended the potential of this story and this room. While I would still recommend to watch this film, at least know you know what you're going into and what you can expect.
