The cryptocurrency market has always been a hotbed of innovation, speculation, and, at times, outright absurdity. One of the most fascinating yet controversial trends in recent years has been the rise of memecoins.
These are cryptocurrencies inspired by internet memes, jokes, or pop culture references. While some memecoins, like Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB), have gained massive popularity and even made headlines for their price surges, they remain highly speculative and risky investments.
That said, it’s important to acknowledge that some traders have made significant profits from memecoins. Some of them gained huge profit in a short period of time, like when TRUMP had launched just a day before Donald J. Trump's inauguration day.
However, for every success story, there are countless others who ended up holding worthless tokens in their wallets. That's why, in my opinion, memecoins are not a sustainable or meaningful investment and why you should instead focus on solid, foundational projects.
Just to name an example, there is Cardano (ADA) as a good choice. Another choices are, again for example only and not an investment guide, there are Stellar Lumens (XLM) or Flare Network (FLR) with solid foundation and real-world use cases.
Or, if you opt to choose the more proven one, the choices are Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), or the new emerging blockchain Solana (SOL). These projects offer real-world utility, long-term potential, and a clear vision for the future of blockchain technology.
What Are Memecoins?
Memecoins are cryptocurrencies that originated as jokes or internet memes. They often lack a serious use case or technological foundation and are primarily driven by hype, social media trends, and community enthusiasm.
Some of the most well-known memecoins include:
- Dogecoin (DOGE): Created in 2013 as a joke based on the popular "Doge" meme featuring a Shiba Inu dog.
- Shiba Inu (SHIB): Marketed as the "Dogecoin killer," SHIB gained popularity during the 2021 memecoin frenzy.
- TRUMP and MELANIA: These memecoins, inspired by the new U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife Melania, are examples of how even political figures can become the basis for speculative crypto assets.
TRUMP, in particular, has gained attention for its skyrocketing price movement. Launched at below $1, it surged up until $75 just in about 24 hours since the launching. Setting historical market valuation for a memecoin.
But, now TRUMP is averaging at $20. Can you imagine buying TRUMP at $75 and still holding it until today? Just calculate, how much loss you bear?
So, while these coins have attracted attention and even made some traders rich, some of them gaining millions profit in hours, their success is largely based on speculation rather than fundamental value.
The Problem with Memecoins
Memecoins may seem fun and exciting, but they come with significant risks and drawbacks. Here’s why they are not a reliable investment:
1. Lack of Fundamental Value
Most memecoins are created as jokes or trends, with no real-world use case or technological innovation. In other words, memecoins lack a meaningful clear purpose or long-term vision and that's why they are not worth holding on to for long.
For traders who can buy and sell quickly, memecoins can be very profitable. Especially if they buy at the beginning of the coin launch. However, that is not an investment. More like luck.
2. Extreme Volatility
Memecoins are notoriously volatile. Their prices can skyrocket one day and crash the next, often driven by social media hype or celebrity endorsements.
We mentioned TRUMP earlier, which soared from under $1 to $75 in just one day. But after that the price slowly dropped.
Another example are:
- Dogecoin surged over 10,000% in early 2021, only to lose more than 70% of its value later that year.
- Shiba Inu experienced similar volatility, with its price swinging wildly based on Elon Musk’s tweets.
This level of volatility makes memecoins more akin to, again, gambling than investing.
3. Pump-and-Dump Schemes
Memecoins are often targeted by pump-and-dump schemes, where manipulators artificially inflate the price of a coin before selling off their holdings, leaving other investors with losses. This is especially common in the memecoin space due to its speculative nature.
4. No Long-Term Potential
While some memecoins may experience short-term gains, they rarely have the staying power to remain relevant in the long term. Once the hype dies down, these coins often fade into obscurity, leaving investors with worthless assets.
Why Solid Projects Are a Better Choice
Instead of chasing memecoins, I suggest it's best to focus on solid, foundational projects that offer real-world utility and long-term potential. Moreover, some of them are still undervalued. There are even coins/tokens whose prices are below the price of memecoins.
Remember, in crypto a low price means there is still a wide opportunity to go higher, which means maximum profit potential for investors.
Here are some examples of such projects, just to name a few:
Cardano (ADA)
Cardano is a blockchain platform known for its scientific approach and focus on sustainability, scalability, and interoperability. At the time I wrote this article, ADA coin was valued at around $0.94. Less than a dollar!
Here’s why Cardano is a solid investment:
- Proof of Stake: Cardano uses a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, which is more energy-efficient than Proof of Work (PoW) systems.
- Smart Contracts: Cardano supports smart contracts, enabling the development of decentralized applications (dApps) and DeFi protocols.
- Academic Rigor: Cardano’s development is backed by peer-reviewed research, ensuring a high level of security and reliability.
Stellar Lumens (XLM)
XLM is a cryptocurrency designed to facilitate fast, low-cost, cross-border payments. It is built on the Stellar network, which aims to connect financial institutions, payment systems, and individuals worldwide.
Here’s why XLM is a promising investment:
- Real-World Use Case: Stellar is used by companies and organizations to enable affordable remittances and financial inclusion.
- Partnerships: Stellar has partnered with major players like MoneyGram and IBM to expand its reach.
- Sustainability: Unlike memecoins, XLM has a clear mission and a strong technological foundation.
Flare Network (FLR)
Flare Network is a blockchain platform that brings smart contract functionality to non-smart contract chains like XRP and Litecoin. It enables these assets to participate in DeFi, NFTs, and other blockchain-based applications.
The best part is, in my opinion, FLR priced at around only $0.025. It's even less than a penny!
Here’s why FLR stands out:
- Innovation: Flare’s FAssets system allows assets like XRP and Litecoin to be used in DeFi, unlocking new possibilities for these ecosystems.
- Interoperability: Flare acts as a bridge between different blockchains, creating a more interconnected and efficient ecosystem.
- Strong Community: Flare has a dedicated community and a clear roadmap for future development.
Or if you still feel unsure about new projects like the three names above, the wisest advice is to invest money in more traditional options. Coins that already have a strong foundation and have been proven to increase investment value.
Yes, just invest your money in the following projects and sleep well every night, then in the years to come you will see your money multiply.
1. Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin is the first and most well-known cryptocurrency. It is often referred to as "digital gold" due to its store-of-value properties.
Here’s why Bitcoin is a wise choice:
- Decentralization: Bitcoin operates without a central authority, making it resistant to censorship and control.
- Scarcity: With a fixed supply of 21 million coins, Bitcoin is designed to be deflationary.
- Mainstream Adoption: Bitcoin is widely accepted as a form of payment and is increasingly being adopted by institutions.
2. Ether (ETH)
Ethereum is the leading platform for decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts. Here’s why Ethereum stands out and you should consider buying ETH:
- Smart Contracts: Ethereum enables the creation of programmable contracts, powering DeFi, NFTs, and more.
- Ecosystem: Ethereum has the largest and most active developer community in the crypto space.
- Upgrades: The transition to Ethereum 2.0 (Proof of Stake) is expected to improve scalability and energy efficiency.
3. Solana (SOL)
Solana is a high-performance blockchain known for its speed and low transaction costs. This name is on the rise and is being touted as the future of blockchain.
Here’s why Solana is a promising investment:
- Scalability: Solana can process thousands of transactions per second, making it ideal for DeFi and NFTs.
- Ecosystem Growth: Solana has attracted a growing number of projects and developers.
- Innovation: Solana’s unique Proof of History (PoH) consensus mechanism sets it apart from other blockchains.
The Risks of Ignoring Solid Projects
By focusing on memecoins, investors risk missing out on the real opportunities presented by projects like Cardano, Stellar Lumens, Flare Network, and others. It can be a costly mistake.
Here’s why:
1. Missed Growth Potential
Solid projects with real-world use cases have the potential to grow steadily over time. For example:
- Bitcoin’s store-of-value properties make it a hedge against inflation.
- Ethereum’s smart contract capabilities power the majority of DeFi and NFT projects.
- Solana’s scalability and low fees position it as a strong competitor in the blockchain space.
2. Lack of Diversification
Investing solely in memecoins exposes you to unnecessary risk. Diversifying your portfolio with solid projects can help mitigate losses and increase your chances of long-term success.
3. Wasted Resources
Memecoins often drain resources (time, money, and energy) that could be better spent on researching and investing in meaningful projects.
Invest Wisely, Not Hype-Driven
Memecoins like DOGE, SHIB, TRUMP, and MELANIA may be fun and exciting, but they are not a sustainable or meaningful investment. While some traders have made significant profits from memecoins, the majority end up holding worthless tokens in their wallets.
Instead of gambling on trends, investors should focus on solid, proven foundational projects like Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, or at least give time to new and promising projects such as Cardano, Stellar Lumens, and Flare Network. They offer real-world utility, long-term potential, and a clear vision for the future.
By investing in projects with real value, you can build a more stable and profitable portfolio while contributing to the growth of meaningful blockchain technology. Remember, the crypto market is full of opportunities—don’t waste your time and money on memecoins when there are so many promising projects to explore.
