Let's start by explaining what a Custom Challenge is, for those who don't know this feature in Splinterlands yet, perhaps because they're focused on Ranked or Guild Brawls. So, the Custom Challenge is a way for you to challenge a specific player to a battle, by typing their “handle” / “nickname” in the Opponent box. Once everything is set up and you click “SEND”, he will receive a message showing that you are inviting him to a duel.

The simplest settings you can choose are the cards that will be available and the Summoner’s level. In the cards you can choose: Gold Cards Only, Alpha Cards Only, Gladiator Cards, Modern, Ghost Cards and Ghost Modern. This will make it so that players can only use the cards stipulated in that category. Also, depending on the Summoner Level Caps, there will be a limitation on the level of cards that will be used in the match.

The first function and the main reason for the creation of the Custom Challenge and any game is Fun, that is, it serves for you to invite a friend to play a match with you for entertainment purposes only. You can also invite people to a match for a prize, as was the case with some Splinterlands streamers, where if you beat them in a match you would receive a pack, a card, or spin a roulette wheel, which would be an extra item in the streams.

Now, getting into the more competitive aspect of Splinterlands, with the possibility of customizing matches, you can use this to practice choosing teams in certain situations and receive feedback from your friends/coaches on how you could improve your team, with new cards or by improving the positioning of your units.

In the January 7th update, which you can find in the Patch Note on the Splinterlands Docs, we were able to observe the updates that were made to the custom battle system. The first change was in the interface, which became more modern and now has more customization options, making the match more specific, by removing the element of randomness that occurs in matches.

Now, when paying 10 DEC, having 50k SPS in Stake or owning a Runi, you can choose several customizations. The first is the Mana Cap, how much mana the match will have available for players to choose their team. The second optional option is related to Rulesets, which are rules that change the match by adding an ability, restricting the cards that can be used or adding a buff or debuff to units. Finally, you can select which elements will be available to be used during the match.
