I have been looking for alternatives to the too big mainstream software platforms like Google, Microsoft, Chrome, YouTube, Facebook etc.
So now I'm using Brave Browser (Chrome), Duck Duck Go Go (Google) and today I'm going to talk about LBRY, a viable YouTube alternative.
LBRY (Pronounced Library) is a distributed content sharing platform. It's like YouTube but more. You can share video content but also photographs, text documents, PDF and more.
LBRY is an open source platform that is community driven. It is censorship free and interacts with YouTube in such a way that all your YouTube content can be synchronised, wether you create your content in YouTube or LBRY.
LBRY is a free to use app that allows both the content creator and the viewer to make money using their token, LBRY Credits (ĹBC).
REWARDS
LBRY gives you many different ways to earn rewards. The following screenshots show a range of the rewards I've received. It's not a comprehensive list but gives you a good idea.
The App gives you a number of ways to find content - follow channels, save your preferred tags, newest content, trending content etc.
You can also receive/give tips for quality content.
You are also able to monetize content. You can upload free content or decide to charge LBRY Credits to allow people to watch your content or a combination of both. At the time of publishing you decide wether to monetize or not.
Being a distributed peer-to-peer platform, it by default downloads watched content to your device. This supports the network - after all it's a decentralized platform and the more people who download the better for the network. You can disable this option or, as I do, delete content after a while to free up disk space.
All in all, it's a seamless app that is easy to use and so far I haven't experienced any problems. I've been using it, not as much as I could and after a month or so I've earned $2. You're not going to get rich as a viewer, but as a content publisher there are opportunities to generate an income stream.
