In a recent post titled "Sam Altman leaves OpenAI" I noted how the board had made a decision to remove Sam as the CEO of the company. However, in a bizarre move, Sam Altman will now return to OpenAI to run the company as the CEO under a new board.
Sam Altman Returns
It was a day of big announcement on X in terms of OpenAI and its structure at the very highest level. The former CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, Sam Altman, will be returning to his position as CEO less than a week after being ousted. The strange reversal of events will see the board leaving and being replaced for with Altman to continue as the CEO. The leading generative artificial intelligence startup made announcement on 'X' stating that they had “reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board.”
This new initial board will be led by Bret Taylor, a former co-CEO of Salesforce. Among the other directors on the new board will be Larry Summers, the former US Treasury Secretary, and existing member Adam D’Angelo. The finer details will be considered and figured out via the collaboration of the OpenAI members under this new structure.
It was only on Friday the 17th of November 2023 when Altman was removed from his position as CEO of OpenAI by the board. This was preceded by an unusual company structure which ultimately left him in a weakened position as the CEO. Altman did not loiter, and soon after the entrepreneur announced he was joining Microsoft. Also making use of 'X' Altman went on to note his love and passion for OpenAI and how excited he is to re-join them. He is also aiming to build a strong partnership with Microsoft as he continues to lead OpenAI, noting all he had been doing over the previous days had been to ensure that the team and mission of OpenAI remains intact.
It was also noted that the new board is far from the final edition and while it has been reworked for now, more changes should be anticipated. As for Microsoft, the executive chairman and CEO Sathya Nadella noted that he is “encouraged by the changes to the OpenAI board.” He noted his interest in this being the first step for OpenAI on their journey to becoming a more stable, well-informed, and most of all effective governance of the company.
Crazy news happening at OpenAI but news that should hopefully result in a positive outcome for the company. It shall be interesting to see how this all pans out down the line but for now.... Sam Altman is back!
