Russia to Build 15 New Data Centres

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the news of Russia planning to build 15 new Data Centres as they look to ramp up their crypto mining operations.

15 New Data Centres

A north-eastern part of Russia known as the Komi Republic have announced ambitious plans to construct 15 new data centres as they look to intensify their crypto mining ambitions. This is seen as a robust commitment to expand the nations digital asset infrastructure after the Governor of Komi Republic, Vladimir Uyba, revealed the first two of these data centres will be built in Mikun and Sindor. These first steps of the ambitious project will cost a combined $27.6 million, with significant backing from investors and a local power company already in place.

The project highlights Russia’s determination to strengthen its presence within the crypto space, although it has yet to be revealed which cryptocurrencies will be mined. Bitcoin is expected to be the main focus although there could be scope for mining other tokens. Additional data centres will be developed in other cities and regions within the republic down the line as Russia looks to up its game in the crypto mining space. Back in August 2024 Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law legalizing industrial cryptocurrency mining. This requires all miners to register with a central body and the framework looks to provide clarity and structure to the sector. In turn this is expected to boost both local and international investment.

Komi Republic has been chosen as the location for these data centres given its strategic location and potential for expansion. It is located to the west of the Ural Mountains and while Komi is not traditionally known as a major crypto mining hub it does boast an abundant amount of natural resources. These include oil, gas, and newly opened hydrocarbon fields. It is hoped these will provide a substantial advantage in producing the required energy for the operation of the plants. The region's cold winters and shorter summer periods are ideal for cooling mining equipment which could be a crucial factor in maintaining efficient operations. The region is highlighted in red on the map of Russia below.

Mikum is a major city in the Ust-Vymsky District while Sindor is a smaller settlement in the Knyazhpogostsky District. Governor of Komi Republic, Vladimir Uyba, stated that the two data centres plots have already been allocated and that the republic and a power firm named Energoresource-K would jointly carry out the project. These two parties have already signed a “collaboration agreement” and Uyba noted:

“The project will help us develop the IT industry and digital technologies. [Energoresource-K] is committed for the long term. It is ready to invest about 35 billion rubles [$386.2 million] in the project.”

The news from Komi arrives fast on the heels of other significant developments in Russia's crypto mining sector. The state-owned gas giant Gazprom has reportedly began creating a crypto mining-focused subsidiary and plans to construct a massive 5,000-rig mining centre in Veliky Novgorod. Reports note that Gazprom has earmarked $452.4 million for this venture and expects the projected to have reached full capacity by 2028.

The Russian government is also looking into ways they can provide miners with access to surplus electricity. This will be especially important in areas where the power grid has been strained by illegal mining activities and is part of an overall wider strategy to balance regulatory oversight with the need for infrastructure development.

The government had been forced to crackdown on these illegal mining operations in Siberia, particularly in the Irkutsk Oblast, where a significant mining hub had been developed. Due to this crackdown miners and major industrial participants have been looking for opportunities in other regions and this has brought Komi to the fore of the nations developments. The Komi Republic's new data centres represent a pivotal step in the nation's broader strategy to become a global leader in digital asset mining and Russia is putting itself in a position to leverage its natural resources and regulatory environment to fuel growth in the crypto sector.
