Jack Dorsey spent weeks daring Elon Musk to have "the talk" about Bitcoin. On July 19, 2021, Musk finally showed up.
The Crypto Council for Innovation announced that Musk had joined the lineup for The B Word, an online conference built to make institutions comfortable with Bitcoin. Dorsey had already signed on, and the two had been needling each other on Twitter for a month, with Dorsey tweeting "let's have THE talk" and Musk replying with a wink. Musk's actual position on Bitcoin was messy at the time. Tesla bought $1.5 billion of it in February, then Musk yanked Bitcoin payments in May over mining's energy use, tanking the price along the way.
The conference itself landed two days later, on July 21, with Musk, Dorsey, and Cathie Wood on a panel together. Wildest part is that Musk spent most of it needling Dorsey about accepting crypto for Twitter ads instead of actually resolving anything.
Tesla never resumed Bitcoin payments. The B Word conference quietly ended as a one-off.
That's today in crypto history. See you tomorrow.
