'Off the Grid'
A recent blockchain game on the Avalanche network is taking the gaming sector by storm. Known as 'Off the Grid', the game was released as a battle royale shooter style game and has risen in the ranks of the Epic Game Store. It was developed by Gunzilla Games and sat at the top of the storefronts 'Most Popular Free-to-Play PC Games list last Friday, the 11th of October. It sat above popular games such as Fortnite and Rocket League.
The games put players against each other in a similar way to other battle royale shooters, with the main objectives being to shoot, loot, and survive as the map gets gradually smaller. The game also features its own Avalanche L1 (aka subnet) which will be for its GUN token and in-game items that can be minted and traded as NFTs. This will allow players to maintain control over their in-game items and allow for secondary markets to emerge for in-game assets. The setting of the game is in a futuristic world where players control cybernetically augmented humans and form teams of three to battle against other trios.
Though these blockchain features have not yet been fully implemented, the game has gotten plenty of attention from the mainstream industry and thus far has shown the potential of a promising future far ahead of any other blockchain based game. The current version of Off the Grid is available in early access on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC through the Epic Games Store.
An early access version of the game was available and within it demonstrated missions and in-game items available with Off the Grid's GUN token. Questions remain on whether or not Sony and Microsoft would accept a blockchain game for their respective console and thus open the door for further blockchain games to be playable on their consoles.
The game has also gained massive popularity on the streaming site Twitch, where 'Off The Grid' was among the most watched games on Friday the 11th of October, its official release date. Over 155,000 viewers were watching on, spread across dozens of streamers. This is an audience size comparable to established titles like League of Legends and Grand Theft Auto V.
A Spanish streamer IlloJuan managed to obtain the largest audience among Off the Grid streamers on Friday, with over 28,000 viewers watching on as he blasted his way through enemies. It is important to note that a number of gameplay clips circulating Twitter Friday included the hashtag #OTGpartner. This indicates that the streamer was being compensated for showcasing the game. Included among them was popular streamer Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag, who streamed the game for two days. Other streamers such as Tyler “Ninja” Blevins had been streaming earlier this week in partnership with Gunzilla Games.
The game is a AAA title, which is the equivalent of a blockbuster film for video games, and is a major step up from the traditional clicker games or other Web 3 experiences that are essentially token models first and video games second. When it comes to blockchain gaming, these games have often drawn criticism from users and industry professionals due to their lack of being sustainable. Many have argued that the games are drawn in to earn quick rewards before abandoning the game following their initial payout. This destroys any long-term viability for these games. Many feel the solution is to create compelling and robust gameplay experiences that mainstream gamers want to play with the token and blockchain models being a utility for the games, not the main focus. While it is still early days, things are looking good for 'Off the Grid' so far and this may just be the first venture into a new world of blockchain gaming mixed with AAA titles.
