Today I will be looking at the recent news emerging from Argentina, where President Javier Milei has devalued the local currency, the Peso, as he looks to stabilise the nation. However, the pro crypto leader has yet to enact any plans to introduce Bitcoin as a currency within the South American nation.
Devalued Peso
The newly elected Argentine President, Javier Milei, began his duties on Sunday the 10th of December 2023, and in doing so he immediately implemented his wide-ranging fiscal policies. A very right-wing libertarian president, he is self described as an ‘anarcho capitalist’. This week saw his Economic Minister, Luis Caputo, unveil the new economic measures which will include a target of reducing what they describe as an ‘addiction to a fiscal deficit’ present in Argentine economics.
Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced Tuesday the 12th of December 2023 that the Argentinian Peso's official exchange rate would weaken from 366.5 per dollar to 800 pesos per dollar, marking a devaluation in the currency of 54%. Luis Caputo noted repeatedly in a recorded video published Tuesday night that the nation was in a dire economic situation, stating “There is no more money.”
The Central Bank of Argentina has been furthered tasked with applying another devaluation of 2% per month as part of a shock treatment to the nations addiction to debt. This is because the nation has been facing an economic crisis for many years which has resulted in financial instability and difficult living standards for its citizens. Caputo, echoing Milei, believe that successive governments had been tackling the ‘consequences but not the problem’ and went on to note:
“What we’ve come to do is the opposite of what they always did, and that’s solve the root problem.”
Along with the devaluation of the peso the new government have also announced cuts to public spending. These policies will align with Milei’s stated objectives which have focused around decentralisation and a rolling back of the state. This will include reductions in pension plans and social security, as well as subsidies. Some have gone as far as speculating that the move to devaluate the peso is the first step towards one of Milei's most widely publicised potential policies which would see the Argentine peso replaced with the U.S. Dollar as the nations main currency.
While Milei has not called for a similar adoption of Bitcoin or cryptocurrency similar to that of El Salvador, the nation's leader is a strong advocaat of crypto and he does believe that control over crypto should be handed over to the private sector. Another strong indication of his policies and strategy will be the overall handling of the Central Bank, which will be working on additional 2% devaluation of the peso per month but which Milei has also noted long ago of his desire for the complete abolition of the bank.
While Milei has warned his citizens of a brutal few months ahead amid new radical economic measures, he has also noted that the nation will still expect to see an additional 20%-40% rise in inflation over the months ahead.
The measures imposed by Milei have earned praise from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva commending the “decisive measures” as crucial for restoring stability and rebuilding the country’s economic potential. This should stabilize the economy and allow for more private-sector-led growth, with the IMF noting in a statement:
"These bold initial actions aim to significantly improve public finances in a manner that protects the most vulnerable in society and strengthen the foreign exchange regime."
