Weekend Predictions & Final Results

So in terms of the predicted scores, it was a bad weekend. I got 0/10 correct this weekend. In terms of match-winner/loser, I managed to predict 5/10 correctly in this round of games.

Predicted: Brentford 2-2 Brighton

Result: Brentford 2-0 Brighton

Toney x2

A great win at home for Brentford to put an end to their run of defeats, as Brighton failed to turn up. Brighton passed the chance to move into 4th as Raya made up for his mistakes against Newcastle last time out. Mbuembo hit the bar early on, as they showed their dominance, defending with their bodies on the line to ensure they did not concede. It took 27 minutes for Toney to get his first, as he flicked the ball into the goal perfectly on his 100th appearance for Brentford. Mbuembo had kept the ball alive on the right and played it to Onyeka, who cut it back to Toney. Welbeck, Trossard, and March all saw fine efforts stopped, and the managers De Zerbi and Frank both got booked at the end of a fiery first half. The second half continued in fiery action, and Toney got his second of it game. It arrived on 64 minutes after the striker was fouled inside the box by Veltman and converted the ensuing penalty, making it 29 penalties converted from 29 attempts in all competitions since October 2019. Brentford held on and Brighton lacked much by the end to really threaten their hosts. The result means Brentford are now unbeaten in their last ten league matches.

Predicted: Leicester 1-2 Crystal Palace

Result: Leicester 0-0 Crystal Palace

With Leicester looking to get out of the bottom three, they were doing all the early running in this one. Barnes overran the ball in area after playing a one-two with Daka, who in turn could only shoot straight at Guaita moments later. Eze's brilliant whipped free-kick on the half hour mark was the first real chance Palace managed to create, with Eze also shooting over just before the break. The home fans booed Leicester at half time, knowing they needed more from their players. The Foxes took that as motivation and attacked the Palace goal again and again early in the second half, as Daka and Maddison wasted good chances. It took until 62 minutes for Palace to have their only shot on target in the game, as Edouard poked a shot through a host of bodies and forced a good save from Ward. Castagne headed a late chance straight at Guaita as Leciester were desperate for a winner, and Maddison got a booking for diving in the box in stoppage time. Only in 1983-84 did Leicester have fewer points than their return of 5 points from ten games this season. This was Crystal Palace's sixth goalless draw in the Premier League under Vieira.

Predicted: Fulham 1-1 Bournemouth

Result: Fulham 2-2 Bournemouth

Diop, Mitrovic - Solanke, Lerma

A fast start from the Cherries saw Solanke netting after a superb move saw them work the ball from the back, down the right, and Billing and Solanke combined in the area for the striker to finish on 2 minutes. Although they had the bright start, it was Fulham who took control of the game, with Bournemouth barely in the opposition half. Mitrovic got into the game and his first involvement led to the corner which Fulham got their leveller from, which Diop headed home on 22 minutes. Bournemouth managed to get back ahead 7 minutes later, as Solanke played the ball to Lerma in the box to finish. Fulham dominated possession but it required a double save from Leno to ensure Bournemouth did not add to their lead before the break. Six minutes into the second half and Mitrovic is wrestled to the floor by Lerma from a free kick, resulting in a penalty. The Serbian puts it away into the bottom right corner to level the scores again. The game really opened up from there, with both sides determined to achieve success in it. Fulham pushed on looking for that winner and Bournemouth showed some resilient defending to keep them out. Solanke scored his 50th league goal in English football, while being involved in 5 goals in his last five Premier League games (two goals, three assists). Mitrovic has managed to scored five of his seven Premier League goals this season in his five appearances at Craven Cottage.

Predicted: Wolves 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Result: Wolves 1-0 Nottingham Forest

Neves

Far from an exciting game at Molineux, Wolves and Forest ended the first half without either side having a single shot on target. It was a lacklustre first half, as both sides failed to really gain a foothold into the match. Wolves had the best chance of the half, as Kilman's header hit the post from Traore's cross. The second half saw much more action, as in the 55th minute of the second half finally we got a goal, as Toffolo was penalised for handball from a Traore shot, and Neves struck the resulting penalty past Henderson. With 75 minutes on the clock Forest had their chance from the spot, as Nunes for pulled back Yates at a corner. This time the keeper was the winner, as Sa stood firm to deny Johnson. Wolves held on to secure the three points as Forest will rue another missed opportunity to get something from a league game. The penalty from Neves ended a run of 370 minutes without a goal in the Premier League for Wolves. Johnson meanwhile became the first Nottingham Forest player to fail with a penalty in the Premier League since Stuart Pearce versus Coventry City in December 1994. Forest also now have a record of not winning any of their last 40 Premier League games when they've conceded first.

Predicted: Tottenham 3-2 Everton

Result: Tottenham 2-0 Everton

Kane, Højbjerg

Lampard's side were here to frustrate, and they managed to for large period with their 5-3-2 formation. Spurs only managed a couple of chances in the opening half, a header put over from Richarlison and and a deflected shot from Kane the biggest chances. Everton had the best chances of the half, as Gray blasted over after he got in on goal away from Bentancur. The biggest chance fell to Onana, when a mix-up between Romero and Højbjerg in midfield allowed him through on goal but he sent his finish well into the stands. Richarlison was forced off with injury five minutes into the second half, with Bissouma coming on in his place. Soon after Spurs were ahead, as Pickford  fumbled a routine stop from Doherty and lost the race with Kane for the loose ball just before the hour mark, and Kane finished the penalty emphatically. Spurs pushed forwards and with Everton pushing for an equaliser, it was Bentancur sent the ball across the edge of the area with four minutes left for Højbjerg to score with a deflection off Iwobi. It brings Kane to nine goals in ten league games as he is on fire ahead of the World Cup. Lampard meanwhile suffered his second defeat in a row after the narrow loss to United last time out.

Predicted: Aston Villa 1-2 Chelsea

Result: Aston Villa 0-2 Chelsea

Mount x2

This make it three wins from three for Potter in the league since taking over at Chelsea. Villa started well, with Kepa being the hero on multiple occasions to keep the home side at bay. They were however the creators of their own downfall, as Mings managed to head a looping ball in the Villa penalty area under no pressure straight to Mount to get his first on six minutes. Villa responded well and dominated the half, with Bailey seeing his close range header hitting the bar, while McGinn and Ramsey saw efforts saved. The best chance came when Ings saw his header pushed over by Kepa. Sterling also managed to hit the bar in the first half, and in the second Villa stayed on top. It took Martinez moving the wrong way from a Mount free kick on 65 minutes to double Chelsea's lead, finding the top corner of the net. That spelled the end of things for Villa, who for all their chances could not find a way to score. Garrard has now lost as many games at Villa, 8 in 19, as he did in all his time at Rangers, 8 in 94. It was also Mings 5th error leading to a goal conceded since the beginning of last season.

Predicted: Leeds 0-2 Arsenal

Result: Leeds 0-1 Arsenal

Saka

This game was delayed for 40 minutes, after playing the first 60 seconds, due to a bizarre power cut which meant VAR and HawkEye could not be connected. When things did get going again it was a toe-to-toe encounter, Leeds did not sit back, as Sinisterra's rasping drive just seconds from the restart recovered any momentum the Elland Road crowd had lost in the stoppage. Struijk and Sinisterra both let off shots to show the crowd they were up for it. From there, Arsenal got themselves into the game as Jesues shot over the bar on a counter, and Odegaard shot over. It was on 35 minutes when Saka got the goal, all from Leeds own work as Rodrigo miskicked under no pressure in his own half. He had tried to find Striujk with a strange crossfield ball, instead finding Saka. He played a one-two with Odegaard before smashing a shot home. Bamford came on for Rodrigo at the break, and had the ball in the back of the net after 30 seconds. However, it was ruled out for a push in the back on Gabriel. and the striker saw two more chances wasted. Saliba handled the ball in his own area, giving Bamford the perfect chance from the spot, but Bamford dragged his shot wide of Ramsdale's left-hand post. Leeds kept going but Gabriel stopped a simple tap-in and Summerville blased over in the box late on. Late late drame saw Gabriel given a red and a penalty against him for a kick out at Bamford, but VAR and the pitch side monitor saw the referee reverse the decision from an initial foul by Bamford. Let off for Arsenal, who remain top of the table.

Predicted: Manchester United 1-2 Newcastle

Result: Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle held on in this one to ensure a spoil of the points against United, who will be kicking themselves over their late missed chances. Before the game Sir Alex Ferguson made presentations to Ronaldo (700th career club goals) and De Gea (500th United appearance). From there it was Newcastle who looked on it, as Joelinton managed to beat De Gea twice in the 24th minute, only to see the woodwork deny him. United were stale, and their only real effort of note in the first half was when Antony played a low effort into the near post. The second half was more alive, as Ronaldo had two goals disallowed in the space of two minutes. The first was offside but the second looked more controversial  as he thought Newcastle had taken their free-kick when he nicked the ball off Pope. Rashford came on with 18 minutes to go and nearly made an impact, as he set up Fred who missed an empty net, and then wasted a chance himself as he headed wide. This marks Ten Hag's first draw since taking over as United manager.

Predicted: Southampton 0-1 West Ham

Result: Southampton 1-1 West Ham

Perraud - Rice

Declan Rice managed to end his league goal drought in this one, having not scored since 31st of October last year. West Ham were on a four match winning run in all competitions going into this one, and looked the more dangerous side. The Hammers had only one fit centre back with Kehrer in a back three alongside full-backs Cresswell and Johnson. Fabianski saved from Adams early on, and Scamacca saw an effort from 30 yards go narrowly wide. The opener came on 20 minutes but with some controversy, as Walker-Peters appeared to step over the line when taking a throw-in and then referee Peter Bankes got in the way of Bowen as he tried to prevent the ball from reaching Perraud. The forward scored with a low drive from a deflection off Johnson. Scamacca fired a snapshot over and Paqueta headed wide as West Ham pushed to get back into it. Southampton continued to threaten and Elyounoussi's saw his low shot saved. The second half West Ham ramped up the pressure, and on 64 minutes it paid off as Rice played a one-two with Benrahma before bending an effort into the goal. Hasenhuttl sent on four subs and it nearly paid off but Southampton could not regain the lead, with the home fans booing at the final whistle. West Ham are now unbeaten in their last five away Premier League matches against Southampton.

Predicted: Liverpool 3-2 Manchester City

Result: Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City

Salah

No Konate, Trent on the bench, and Milner starting at right back. It was always going to be a difficult game for Liverpool. As expected, City dominated the midfield, and the game in general from the off, with Liverpool really showing how down on form and confidence they are in terms of league games. Jota had Liverpool's first real chance after 20 minutes, but it was a tame header. Milner managed a beautiful cross which should have been turned home, and finally five minutes before the break Haaland got on the end of a beautiful cross when peeling off Gomez, but his header was straight at Alisson. The second half sparked into like as a Salah breakaway in the 50th minute saw Ederson make an excellent save, but injure himself in the process but was able to continue. Straight away from the goal kick and City had the ball in the net, but a foul by Haaland on Alisson meant the referee checked the monitor and it was ruled out. Soon after a flowing move from Liverpool saw Salah chip to an unmarked Jota, who headed over when he should have scored as this game became end to end. The interplay with Liverpool meant them began to create the better chances, with Salah switching from centre forward to winger as will. On 64 minutes Alisson made a terrific save to keep out Haaland from close range. It really became end to end, as Jota, Salah, and Silva all missed when in good positions. On 76 minutes Salah broke the deadlock, as a complete mix up at the back for Cancelo from a long Alisson goal kick allowed Salah through on goal, and Ederson was not saving it this time. Two minutes later Nunez, on for Firmino, took a driving long range shot which went just wide. In the last ten minutes Van Djik showed why he is still one of the best as he diverted a cross over his own bar from close range. An almost WWE style challenge by Silva on Salah resulted in flaring tempers and Klopp getting a red card on the side line. With the clock running down Liverpool found themselves 3 on 1, and Nunez should have played in Salah who was completely unmarked, but Nunez went himself. In the first minute of six in injury time Alexander Arnold came on for Salah as Liverpool looked to run out the clock and Milner moving into midfield. Foden manages to flash a ball into the box inn the 94th minute, just waiting for Haaland to finish it, but he is nowhere to be found. In the final moments Nunez has a beautiful chance when through on Ederson, but when all it required was a delicate dink, the striker gets it completely wrong. Late late into added time and Jota had to be taken off with what looked a hamstring injury, adding to Liverpool's issues this season. Ten minutes of added time later and its all over, with Liverpool securing the points to inflict a first defeat of the season on City, while injecting life into their own campaign.

Table After Match Day 10

A look at the top half of the table and Arsenal managed to open a nice lead over the chasing pack with their win over Leeds. City and Spurs remain level on points, with Chelsea making up the top four. Liverpool have climbed back to eight with their win over Man City, and United, Newcastle, and Brighton all ahead of them.

As for the bottom half, Forest remain bottom on goal difference with Leicester just ahead of them. Southampton make up the relegation zone while Wolves, Villa, and Leeds are all just one point clear of safety. Everton and Crystal Palace will also be looking over their shoulders with them both only a point ahead of those behind them.
