Week Predictions & Final Results
So in terms of the predicted scores, I got 1/10 correct scores this week. In terms of match-winner/loser, I had a mixed weekend where I managed to predict 5/10 correctly in this round of games.
Predicted: Wolves 0-3 Liverpool
Result: Wolves 1-3 Liverpool
Hwang - Gakpo, Robertson, Bueno OG
Liverpool had a much changed side following the international break, with Quansah making his debut at the back and Gomez starting in place of Alexander-Arnold. It was Wolves who looked the fresher and the hosts were ahead on 7 minutes. Neto drove at the Liverpool defence before driving the ball through the six-yard box for Hwang to bundle the ball in. Moments later he was in again thanks to Semedo, but Gomez made a vital tackle. Neto continued to test Gomez and stepped inside before shooting wide, while Cunha miskicked when Neto managed to get him clear in the area. Szoboszlai had an effort saved while Salah had one blocked as Liverpool struggled to create. Diaz came on for Mac Allister as Liverpool moved to a 4-2-4 and began to dominate. On 55 minutes they were level when Salah's cross-shot was converted by Gakpo. Nunez replaced Gakpo and shot wide soon after, while Joao Gomes volleyed over from a Gomez cross. Sa blocked a Nunez effort, Szoboszlai shot over, and Diaz saw an effort blocked by Dawson. A poor Sa kick resulted in some neat interplay between Salah and Robertson before the Scotsman, captaining the side on his 200th league appearance for the club, slotted home. Substitute Elliott saw his effort from outside the area deflect off Bueno and go in just off the post in the first minute of injury time to confirm a solid win for Liverpool. Salah became only the fourth player to register an assist in five consecutive away Premier League games, following Fàbregas, Izzet, and Deulofeu. Wolves meanwhile lost a Premier League game in which they went ahead at home for the first time since March 2022 against Leeds.
Predicted: Aston Villa 2-0 Crystal Palace
Result: Aston Villa 3-1 Crystal Palace
Durán, Douglas Luiz, Bailey - Edouard
Villa dominated the ball early on while Palace sat back and hit them on the counter. As expected, the rigid structure of Hodgson matched up to the attacking threat of Emery in the opening stages of the match, but Watkins pounced on an error for the first opening of the game. His one-on-one was saved by Johnstone. Diaby looked to have opened the scoring from a Pau Torres' ball over the top in the 34th minute, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Cash missed his kick from a Zaniolo's cutback, before heading over from a Digne cross. While Palace were quiet in attack during the first half, they opened the scoring two minutes into the second. Mateta spun Torres before crossing for Edouard to score. On the hour-mark Palace could have had two, but Andersen saw his header diverted wide by Ward. Duran saw a shot saved while Watkins and Bailey both had shots blocked as Villa looked for a route back. Watkins curled an effort off the post but on 87 minutes it was Duran who got Villa level when he controlled Digne's cross on his chest before firing home. Richards brought down Watkins to give away a penalty, which was converted by Douglas Luiz on 98 minutes. In the 101 minute Bailey scored from close range to seal the victory. It was Villa's ninth consecutive Premier League home, while it was only the second time in the Premier League era that Palace scored the opener in the second half but went on to lose the match.
Predicted: Fulham 2-1 Luton
Result: Fulham 1-0 Luton
Vinicius
The Cottagers dominated possession during the first half, but they struggled to create any real clear opportunities. Tete's glancing header at the near post was the closest they came while Luton were soaking up the pressure. The Hatters saw Morris volley wide when the ball dropped to him in the box, Brown headed against the post from Kabore's cross. In the second half Bell forced a save from Leno early on, and this seemed to kick life into Fulham. Palhinha headed onto the roof of the net but on 65 minutes Willian's cross was parried into the path of Vinicius to poke home. Willian had an effort of his own deflect behind, while Lockyer glanced a late chance wide for Luton. Fulham had 77.8 per cent possession in this one, which ended up being the most they have ever had in a Premier League game since records began in 2003/04. Luton meanwhile continue to struggle, losing all four of their Premier League games so far while also being only second to Wolves for goals conceded in the second half of Premier League matches this season.
Predicted: Manchester United 2-2 Brighton
Result: Manchester United 1-3 Brighton
Mejbri - Welbeck, Groß, Joao Pedro
Ten Hag has overseen United lose three of their opening five Premier League games for the first time in 33 years, while their home loss also ended a run of 20 unbeaten games at Old Trafford. Hojlund and Reguilon were handed debuts, and the full back did pick out Rashford early on only for his effort to be saved. Hojlund just could not reach a simple goal from a Rashford pass soon after, but in the 20th minute it was Brighton who stole the lead. Former United player Welbeck got to Adingra's cutback before smashing home past Onana. Rashford continued to threaten for United, seeing an effort blocked by Dahoud, before a shot came off Veltman's back and hit the top of the bar. Hojlund thought he had a goal before the break, but it was ruled out by VAR as Rashford's cross was out of play. Rashford wasted two more opportunities in the second half before Brighton struck once again. Lamptey crossed for the waiting Groß on 53 minutes, who controlled the ball before scoring. On 71 minutes a Lamptey cut back found Pedro, who struck sweetly to extend the lead. On 73 minutes Mejbri fired home into the bottom corner from 25 yards out, reducing the deficit but United left it too late. Brighton debutant Fati could have added another for the Seagulls late on, and De Zebri has now become the eighth manager to win both of his first two Premier League games against Manchester United. United have also conceded two or more goals in each of their last four Premier League games.
Predicted: Tottenham 3-0 Sheffield United
Result: Tottenham 2-1 Sheffield United
Richarlison, Kuluseveki - Hamer
Spurs struggled in the opening half here as 'Angeball' could not break down the rigid and frustrating system of Sheffield United. Foderingham made seven saves in the first half as he denied Son, Bissouma, and Sarr early on. It was Spurs who needed Vicario to keep out McAtee's effort with his left foot. Foderingham kept up the saves until the break, and Foderingham continuted in the same fashion for the second half. A collision with van de Ven led to a long stoppage and frustration for the home fans, but the biggest surprise came on 73 minutes. Robinson's long throw allowed for Hamer to fire home in off the base of the post. Johnson, Richarlison, and Perisic came on in the 80th minute and the switches paid off. In the eight minute of injury time Perisic saw his corner headed in by Richarlison for just his second league goal for the club. Two minutes later Richarlison assisted for Kulusevski to fire past Foderingham. The win means Spurs have now scored in their last 17 league games, while Sheffield United's struggle for points and form continues.
Predicted: West Ham 1-3 Manchester City
Result: West Ham 1-3 Manchester City
Ward-Prowse, Doku, Silva, Haaland
The Hammers needed Soucek to clear the ball off the line early on here, before Areola made a good save to keep the game level. As City looked their dominant and unstoppable self, on 36 minutes West Ham struck. Ward-Prowse managed to get his head to the ball first as he scored from Coufal's cross. City did not relent however, and Doku looked a constant threat. With 43 seconds on the clock in the second half, Doku beat Coufal with a swift run before blasting the ball in beyond Areola. City continued to press, and in the 76th minute Alvarez scooped the ball up for Silva to blast City into the lead. With City in the lead and time running out, it was Haaland who popped up in the 86th minute to sweep home from Silva's cross and ensure the three points. Pep was delighted with the win and the role of Alvarez, who now has three assists in five appearances this season. Doku has already shown how good he can be and why Pep brought him in over the summer. Moyes meanwhile will be aware that against City, the odds are always low. He will focus his side on their upcoming Europa League campaign, while City prepare to defend their Champions League title.
Predicted: Newcastle United 2-2 Brentford
Result: Newcastle United 1-0 Brentford
Wilson
The Magpies were once again lacking fluency early on as Howe made five changes to the starting line-up. Hickey forced a save from Pope as Brentford threatened, while Wissa missed the ball from a Jensen cross at the far post. Guimaraes should have put Newcastle ahead when he met a Schar flick-on from a corner, but his header was saved by Flekken. Henry had to go off with a knee injury before half time, while Wilson saw an effort early in the second half ruled out by VAR for obstruction. Flekken then gave away a penalty for a needless foul on Gordon, which Wilson swept home in the 64th minute. Mbeumo handled following an aerial challenge with Barnes and Newcastle thought they had another penalty, but VAR ruled the ball hit his head before his arm. Wissa missed again from close range late on as Brentford struggled to find a way back into the game, and in the end it was a deserved win for Newcastle. While Howe will know his side were not at their best, they will take confidence ahead of their Champions League game against Milan in the week. As for Brentford, they have lost their unbeaten record for this season, but Frank will know they are more than performing without Toney and should be in contention for a solid finish this season.
Predicted: Everton 1-1 Arsenal
Result: Everton 0-1 Arsenal
Trossard
Raya made his Arsenal debut in goal, and the Gunners made a bright start to proceedings. but it was Everton via Gueye who forced a save from Raya. Arsenal found their way and they had the ball in the back of the net from Martinelli, only for Nketiah to have been ruled offside in the build-up. Moments later Martinelli had to go off, with Trossard on in his place. Doucoure went to ground in the box but his penalty appeal was waved away as the match became stop-start. Arsenal lost their momentum, but after the break they Odegaard forced a save from Pickford. Tarkowski and Branthwaite made a succession of blocks at the back before an Arsenal corner undid it all. The ball was played to Saka, who cut it back for Trossard to put into the far corner on 69 minutes. Calvert-Lewin came on for Everton to return from injury, but had the same struggles as Beto from a lack of creativity behind them. Odegaard and Vieira both had chances for Arsenal late on, who managed to get past their Goodison hoodoo by winning here for the first time since October 2017. The Toffees have now lost six of their last seven at home as another relegation fighting season looks on the cards.
Predicted: Bournemouth 2-2 Chelsea
Result: Bournemouth 0-0 Chelsea
Chelsea had the brighter start here, as Pochettino saw Sterling drag an effort wide before Jackson hit the post. Ouattara then saw a close range effort saved by Sanchez as the Cherries looked to steal a lead. Neto was forced into a save by Chelsea captain Gallagher as neither side could force a lead in the first half. After the break Chelsea had the ball in the net when Sterling hit the bar from a free-kick before Colwill turned in the rebound, however it was flagged offside. Bournemouth had their own chances which included Billing's free-kick deflecting just wide, and Solanke seeing an effort saved. Chelsea sub Palmer nearly netted the winner by saw his close range effort saved. Pochettino was not happy to leave without the win, but his side are on an awful run. Two wins from their last 16 away league games means they have yet to rectify the issues of last campaign. Bournemouth meanwhile are unbeaten in three of their last four Premier League home games against Chelsea.
Predicted: Nottingham Forest 2-0 Burnley
Result: Nottingham Forest 1-1 Burnley
Hudson-Odoi - Amdouni
It was Burnley who started this game the brighter of the two sides, but Hudson-Odoi and Awoniyi posed plenty of threat for Forest. It was an end to end contest throughout. Trafford stood strong in goal for Burnley from Hudson-Odoi, while Awoniyi and Gibbs-White tested the Burnley defence. Turner saved from Amdouni but the Swiss international made sure to score in the 41st minute to give Burnley the lead from a Koleosho cross. After the break Forest came back strong and on 61 minutes they got level. Awoniyi played the ball to Hudson-Odoi, who in turn curled a beautiful effort into the far top corner via the post. Foster tapped in for Burnley with 12 minutes left on the clock after Berge had raced through, but he was judged to have handled the ball int he build-up. Foster was then sent off for flinging an elbow at Yates in stoppage time as the game ended level with a share of the points. Awoniyi has now scored or assisted in each of his last nine Premier League appearances for Nottingham Forest, while Burnley are yet to lose a Premier League away game when leading at half-time.
