Chapter 9

Dozens of shipwrecks, sprayed with the skeletons of their dead crews, were spewed out on a plateau. Ciri had arrived through the portal into Stygga Castle. Ciri rode through the wrecks and arrived at a gate. The guards noticed her and a furore broke out. As she rode forwards her way was blocked. Boreas came forth and introduced himself, reminding her they had met on the ice long ago. Ciri remained calm and demanded to see the Lord of the castle, as she was there for Yennifer and her destiny. Stefan Skellen emerged, gesturing for Ciri to follow him. She did as told, surrounded on both sides by guards. Boreas conversed with his fellow soldiers recruited by Skellen, reminding them how he held no grudge to Ciri for the deaths on the ice. She had spared his life after all, and that of Skellen. The crows from the shipwrecks had silently flown and flocked to the castle. They sensed death, with Bonhart and Viglefortz waiting for Ciri.

Skellen led her up three flights of stairs, glancing back at Ciri multiple times with disdain in his eyes. She felt no fear. They entered a room, and with three quick strides Bonhart had grabbed Ciri and lifted her to his face. He claimed hell must have been worse if she chose to return to him. Viglefortz called out for Ciri to approach him. Noticing his disfigured face and eye, Ciri began to feel fear. The magic was vibrating in the castle, and she knew her plan of using her magic abilities to escape was no longer an option. Viglefortz read her thoughts, proclaiming that he planned to take her powers so he could too travel through time and space. Ciri, through her dry throat, managed to speak at last. She wanted Yennifer released, and in return would do as Viglefortz wanted. She would have his child, as that’s what everyone wanted. They all laughed. Ciri undeterred, tried to draw her sword to show she was serious, but Viglefortz used magic to make her head spin. She was powerless. The sorcerer made it clear she had no choice, her offer was pathetic, and he would do as he pleased with her whether she wanted it or not.

Ciri was dragged to the laboratory, one which reminder her of the laboratory in the Temple of Melitele. The differences were quite obvious, mainly the horrendous chair in the centre of the room. Viglefortz explained his intentions, how he wanted power. He would make use of Ciri’s Elder blood to rule over worlds. She would be placed in the chair and impregnated with a glass tube. However, Viglefortz only needed her placenta blood and her child would never be born. Ciri realised the terror and horror of her situation. Bonhart suggested Yennifer be forced to watch, to which Viglefortz agreed. Ciri screamed. She screamed so loud, the entire castle responded with yelling and commotion.

Boreas Mun was out in the courtyard with other guards. They were in discussion regarding how Skellen was now an outlaw, and under his command they were no better. The crows were a bad omen according to a guard named Zadarlik. Suddenly an elderly man, thin and grey haired, appeared alongside them. He commanded them to open the gate, and the guards did as they were instructed. Next thing four riders galloped into the courtyard, slicing down the guards. Only Boreas remained, and in shock, he told them where Ciri was. Geralt, Angoulême, Milva, Cahir, and Regis rushed up the stairs to save Ciri.

Viglefortz, having been informed of the last ditch reinforcements, instructed for Ciri to be bound with dimeritium and locked in a cell. He, along with Skellen and Bonhart, would deal with the intruders.

Geralt and his gang raced through the castle, attacking anybody they encountered. Regis decided to fly off to do some reconnaissance, and soon Geralt, Cahir, Angoulême and Milva were pinned down by archers. Milva shot back as her allies made their escape behind cover. She was deadly, and the enemy was growing afraid as she shot down one after another. Her final kill was one of beauty, but the archer she shot managed to let off his arrow right before he died. It split Milva’s insides open, and although Cahir and Geralt dragged her to safety, she passed away while Angoulême begged her Auntie not to die.

Ciri was being dragged by the lackeys to chain her up and lock her away. She struggled and ended up pinned on the ground of the laboratory. Suddenly a bang and noise took over as a bat flew around, attacking the lackeys while creating havoc by knocking over all the vials possible. Regis was before Ciri, sitting in the horrendous chair, and draining the blood from a victim. He explained calmly he was an ally of Geralt, and they were there to save her. Trembling but not afraid, she told him she needed to find and save Yennifer, and for Regis to warn Geralt that Viglefortz was in the castle. Regis returned to Geralt and repeated the message, although the Witcher was displeased that the vampire left Ciri alone. Geralt told them to fight their way up the castle while he went to find both Ciri and Yennifer.

Rounding a corner Geralt found Yennifer, with four lackeys dragging her along. At once Geralt struck one of them down, and the others backed off, bar one who held a knife to Yennifers throat. Geralt showed he was not messing about, and the lackey backed off. Immediately Geralt made use of his Witcher sword to destroy Yennifers shackles, and destroy the dimeritium collar around her neck. They set off together, Yennifer full of power and rage, and Geralt, full of adrenaline, to find Ciri. To save Ciri. To get revenge on Viglefortz.

Yennifer and Geralt happened upon more men, and between them they dispatched more than ten. Suddenly Viglefortz appeared above them. He commended their efforts, but claimed they were in vain. Fire shot from his hands and terror from his abilities. Geralt and Yennifer ducked and dodged, but Viglefortz made it clear they were no match for him. They had chosen to piss against the wind, and they had pissed into a hurricane.

Skellen was among the men on the lower stories of the castle, and after hearing of the phantom vampire and immaculate creatures roaming the halls, he decided they would wait out the battle. The stairs was the only way out, and they would wait to see what emerged. He ordered them to destroy the art of the walls and burn them for light. Boreas Mun had made up his mind.

Ciri was wandering through the multiple corridors, when she finally decided to yell out for Yennifer. It was a mistake, as immediately Bonhart was upon her. He punched her in the face and pinned her against the wall. Having fondled her, he then tossed her to the ground and threw her sword, Swallow, at her feet. He would bleed her dry, but make sure he had his way with her first. She was his, and he cared little for sorcerers or prophecies. Ciri looked in his eyes, and decided to run. To run using her abilities. She pressed her hands to her temples, and immediately Bonhart understood. He lunged for her but it was too late. However, the power of the castle stopped Ciri escaping, instead she teleported to the other end of the galley, out of Bonharts reach. She ran, with him chasing.

Running through the corridors to try and confuse Bonhart, suddenly Ciri raced into a room and encountered the Nilfgaardian soldier with the winged helmet. She froze, recalling Cintra. To her amazement, he did not attack her, instead he, along with a woman holding a sabre, dashed behind Ciri to attack the guards pursuing her. Angoulême got hit in the leg, but they managed to close the door. Cahir introduced himself to Ciri, but before they knew it Bonhart found them. Cahir told the women to flee, he would deal with Bonhart. Ciri helped the limping  Angoulême as Cahir fought bravely with Bonhart. He was quick, but not quick enough. Bonhart managed to bury his knife in Cahirs neck, ending the Nilfgaardians life.

Ciri and Angoulême struggled on down the corridors before Angoulême could go no further. Ciri suddenly noticed the pool of blood beneath her, and how bad the girls wound was. Angoulême explained through her pain and ghastly white face that she had followed Geralt to find Ciri. That Ciri was a Queen. She rested her head on Ciri’s shoulder and it took Ciri some time to realise she was holding a dead girl in her arms.

As Ciri made her way down a corridor, Bonhart appeared. He steeped over the lifeless Angoulême with Cahir's blood dripping from his sword. He called out to his betrothed, claiming that he would have her. Ciri knew she could not run, so she circled him. They exchanged blows and Ciri felt the blood rushing down her arm where he nicked her. She backed away but it was a dead end, as the floor had caved into the story below and only the beams remained. They battled on the beams, as Ciri jumped from on to another and parried his blows. She recalled how Geralt had taught her on the pendulum in Kaer Morhen. Using her speed and agility she managed to get Bonhart with her blade, and losing his balance he fell to the ground below. Ciri jumped down after him. He was wounded and staggering, and Ciri cut the Witcher medallions from his neck as he begged for mercy. As Ciri walked away he silently lunged at her with a knife, yelling just before he was about to strike. That blow never came, as Ciri span and in a swift movement Swallow slashed open Bonharts neck. He perished at the hands of the girl he tortured, the hands of the girl whom he had killed the woman she loved.

Geralt and Yennifer were pinned down from Viglefortz magic, as Geralt could not land a blow and Yennifer could not penetrate the magic. Suddenly Regis appeared, quietly getting at Viglefortz and slashing his face. As the vampire was about to sink his teeth in, suddenly Viglefortz unleashed hellish fire, so hot the screams from Regis smashed the stained glass windows. All that was left was an outline of the vampire. Viglefortz turned his focus on Geralt, having left Yennifer in a bloodied heap. They exchanged blows, but Viglefortz was too strong. As he bashed at Geralt with his iron bar, suddenly the Witcher grasped his medallion. The one Fringilla had given him. Viglefortz aimed but missed. Viglefortz missed again. Geralt did not. He slashed the sorcerer from collarbone to hip. As Viglefortz cried out Geralt's name, the Witcher did not let him finish. He helped Yennifer up and they both agreed they were bloodied and bruised, but alright. Geralt claimed he would miss Regis, as Yennifer noted it was thanks to Ciri they were alive. Since Viglefortz lost his eye his coordination was never the same. The looked one last time at the sorcerers head, sitting alone in the middle of the floor, before setting off.

The three of them met in the place where the corridors came together. Yennifer straighterned herself up before embracing Ciri. Mama and Daughter. Yennifer's hands were in a bad way, but the Witcher was just happy his two women were alright. Geralt was relieved, but tired of the struggles. He would not let his emotions take over, but was delighted to see Ciri alive. Geralt looked to the corridor where Ciri had emerged from, hoping to see if someone would emerge from it. Ciri shook her head and Geralt understood that Cahir and Angoulême had not made it. They made for the stairs, the only way out and the one with Skellen below. Ciri glanced at Yennifer before pulling out the medallions she took from Bonhart, putting the Wolf on Geralt and the Cat on Yennifer. As they made they way down to the first landing Skellen sent wave after wave of men, which Geralt and Ciri dispatched of. More and more men were slashed as they made it to the second landing.

Skellen called for the crossbows. Boreas Mun had been ordered to get them, but by now he was on a steed far away, deserting and saving himself. Skellen managed to grab one of the crossbows they had and fired, but Ciri deflected the bolt. As they made their way down to the first landing all of Skellen's remaining men were huddled outside, and Skellen joined them. Suddenly a horde of Nilfgaardian soldiers entered the courtyard, surrounding the remaining guards along with Skellen. The men dropped their weapons and were bound. The leader of the Nilfgaardian troops came forth and noticed Skellen, announcing he would be tried for treason. Geralt, Ciri, and Yennifer emerged and sat on the steps. One on either side of Geralt, resting their heads on his shoulders. The commander approached Geralt, and noted how the Witcher had travelled far for these women. He ordered his soldiers to watch over the women while he spoke in private with Sir Geralt of Rivia.

Emhyr var Emreis removed his helmet, granting Geralt the privilege of sitting in the presence of the emperor. Geralt explained he knew Emhyr was infact Duny, Ciri’s real father. Duny explained how he had become emperor, from the curse placed on him when he was young and his travels north to Cintra. He found Pavetta and won her heart, and soon after Viglefortz approached him. The sorcerer showed Duny the prophecy regarding his daughter Ciri, how she would bestow him a child, and that child would have a son who would rule the world. Together they hatched a plan for Duny, Pavetta, and Ciri to be teleported via the whirlpool in the sea off Skellige to Viglefortz, making it look like they had all died. The plan failed as Pavetta had seen through Duny and sent Ciri away before the ship set sail. Pavetta fell overboard before the ship teleported, meaning only Duny had made it. He gained his rightful throne thanks to a Coup D’Etat and began his pursuit of Ciri. She was to be his bride, unloved, but bearing his children. She would never know he was her father. Geralt understood this meant he would be executed for knowing the truth, and Yennifer would too. Neither could remain alive as Emhyr knew they would come for Ciri. Emhyr granted Geralt the chance to convince Yennifer that they both take a warm bath and slit their wrists to die with dignity. She agreed, and they bade farewell to Ciri.

Ciri was distraught, having only just got back to Geralt and Yennifer and she was now being taken away from them. She stood right in front of Emhyr and demanded he not take her. Enough blood has been split in the war and she would not let him do anything to her. She would kill him in his sleep. Geralt was amazed at how clear and obvious her similarities were to Emhyr, and how nobody else had noticed. Ciri gave Yennifer and Geralt one last hug.

Emhyr brought Geralt and Yennifer to the steam baths and informed them they could take their time, that a soldier with a knife would be waiting for them when they were ready. The pair enjoyed each other one last time, before finally calling out for the knife. There was no answer. Suddenly Ciri popped her head in and told them to dress, Emhyr and the soldiers had left. It was just the three of them.

Emhyr had seen Ciri break down crying, sobbing like a child being taken away from Geralt and Yennifer. He understood the right thing to do, and ordered her to be freed. He caressed her hair and cheek before he let her go, and to Ciri his touch did not feel strange or unfamiliar. Finally, he said goodbye daughter, before riding away with all his troops.

The lodge of sorceresses discussed the matters afters they had discovered Viglefortz death. They were amused that Geralt had killed him, and at the same time managed to free both Yennifer and Ciri. Fringilla sent Triss and Keira to destroy every remaining trace of Stygga Castle.

Chapter 10

Boreas Mun was roasting some meat on a spit when he noticed a figure watching him. Calling it out, a man appeared from the form of a menhir. He was a powerfully built man, but described himself as a pilgrim. Afterwards, Mun called out another figure he could see, and this time an elf appeared. Boreas invited them to sit with him as he roasted a rat, which he had shot earlier. Once it was ready they dug in, although the powerful man, referring to himself as a Pilgrim, could not figure out what kind of meat it was. The elf was clearly aware. As they finished up eating conversation turned to where they were heading, as Mun was going towards Elskerdeg. Neither man nor elf answered, but it was clear. The elf explained he had to leave following the Peace of Cintra, and the Pilgrim began to explain how the Peace of Cintra had not been as favourable to him as he had expected.

On the second of April, under a full moon, the kings arrived in Cintra. Dijkstra looked around the great hall, where the infamous banquet where Pavetta and the Steel Urcheon took place. They were beckoned by Cyrus Engelkind Henmelfart, the Hierarch of Novigrad to take their places at a round table. Meve, Queen of Rivia and Lyria, King Foltest of Temeria, his vassal King Venzlav of Brugge, King Demevad of Aedirn, King Henselt of Kaedwen, King Ethain of Cidaris, young King Kistrin of Verden, Duke Nitert of the Redanian Regency Council, and Count Djikstra. The head of the Nilfgaardian delegation, Baron Shilard Fitz-Oesterlen also took his place.

In the side room, where Pavetta had revealed to Queen Calante and Geralt that she was pregnant, lay the sorceresses in wait. Phillipa urged them to sit down as they awaited the rulers of the world to make their inaugural speeches. Making use of a telecommunicator they were able to watch in on the proceedings of the rulers, ensuring they did not go too wild.

King Demavend and King Henselt were in great disagreement regarding the return of Upper Aedirn. Demavend made it clear Henselt's forces had been pillegers and bandits when they entered the land, while Henselt argued his side went there to save the lands from a Nilfgaardian invasion. Their arguments got heated until Shilard Fitz-Oesterlen interrupted. Demavend made it clear he was willing to abide by the agreement that Dol Blathanna will be its own autonomous duchy, with equal rights for humans and elves. However, he would not back down on Upper Aedirn. Demavend demanded one week for the Kaedwenian army to vacate the castles of Upper Aedirn. Henselt was fed up at this point and roared that no force would take the lands off him.

Sabrina snorted in the upstairs chamber, instructing her fellow sorceresses that within ten days those lands would be conceded and returned to Demavend. As for Dol Blathanna, the sorceresses knew that Demavend had made his stance on the situation, but were unsure of the thoughts of the other Kings on Emhyr's memorandum. The ladies discussed, as Assire var Anahid made it clear Fitz-Oesterlen would argue for a day before making any concessions on Dol Blathanna. They turned to Francesca Findabair, and she made it clear she would allow for Demavend's demands of equality of humans and elves. However, she would not agree to liege homage. Dol Blathanna would be a Vassal and swear loyalty, but nothing more. Phillipa pressed the issue of how Demavend would demand his income and rent, his familial inheritance. Francesca laughed, as the elf knew she would long outlive the King and would instead be dealing with his grandchildren. Assire questioned about the Scoia'tael, to which Francesca made it clear war has its price. Seemingly peace does too.

The Scoia'tael were disgusted upon learning they were being handed over as war criminals as part of the peace of Cintra. It was made clear to them they would be given leniency in their trials and amnesty, and only the thirty officers would be handed over, no soldiers.

Baron Shilard Fitz-Oesterlen was greeted by the envoy of Berebgar Leuvaarden, the new Steffen Skellen. His orders were clear and simple, the Empire would ensure their settlers left the Northern Realms and returned to Nilfgaard, and in return it would hasten a true peace. A true peace which would ensure the borders remained open and trade ensued. Nilfgaard had destroyed the north’s lands and agriculture, but were busy overproducing their own. While it would seem the north had won, it was Nilfgaard who would benefit with the money flowing into their kingdom in the long term.

Back at the negotiating table only one matter of importance was left. What to do with Cintra. The kings and queen Meve wanted it resolved, but Fitz-Oesterlen made it clear the matter would be easily resolved. Upstairs the sorceresses were in discussion of the same matter. Some argued it should be a free city, while other claimed it should be a trust territory of Foltest. Finally Assire of Nilfgaard spoke, and she made it clear the matter had already been solved and taken care of. Triss gasped, as she knew what this meant.

Emhyr made it clear to Vattier that Skellen was to be given a fair trial, but a harsh punishment of death. They discussed Djikstra, and their gratitude for his information, with Vattier suggesting a return of information may be the best way to say thanks. Stella Cosgrave arrived with the fake Ciri, and Emhyr took the girl on a walk. They discussed simple matters, and in the end Emhyr realised he saw similarities in her and the real Ciri. He would have to attend Cintra for the signing of the peace treaty, but he did not want this girl killed by Vattier. He did not know if he could love her, but he held her in a warm embrace and called her his raison d’état.

Cintra was packed for festivities and happiness was in the air, as Emhyr was to marry “Ciri” after the peace of Cintra was signed. Triss, like many others, knew the truth, but said nothing as she knew it would keep the real Ciri safe. They would forget about her, she would have peace.

The streets were adorned with cheering crowds as the remaining riders of the condeterri rode through. Pretty Kitty gazed upon the kings and leaders, noting Henselt, Demavend, and even Prince Radovid. Adam Pangratt decided it was now or never, and asked her to marry him. Julia was shocked, but happy at the same time.

Dijkstra was late, much to the contempt of Phillipa Eilhart. He had his reasons, and made it clear to her they needed to discuss matters in private. Only once Phillipa was ready, as for now she wished to enjoy the celebration of the stately ceremony with the dawning of a new era.

Jarre was still getting used to his missing arm, as he was trundling along on the wagon carrying military invalids'. Lucienne, the peasant girl steering the wagon, was kind to Jarre. She noticed his forget me not medallion, and asked what name was inside. Jarre was shy, but she made out the word Cirilla. As Lucienne began to tell Jarre of how she always attracted scholars, one of the cripples in the back asked her to hasten the pace. They wished to get to a tavern to drink. Suddenly, six horses with eight elven riders appeared. As the elves passed the wagon one of the females stopped her horse. Lucienne realised why, and held out some bread. The invalids followed suit, and held out food for the elves, and for the first time in over a thousand years the elves were taking help from humans. Later the wagon arrived, and they were questioned about any possible elves by a White Rayla. They lied from pity, but White Rayla knew the truth.

As the dwarves marched through Novigrad to the fanfare and applause, suddenly there was great laughter in the crowd. The Volunteer Regiments, who had seen their payments rationed and cut, were giving a distasteful middle finger to the kings above.

Steffen Skellen's trial was short and swift, being sentenced to death for an attempt on the Imperial Majesty, along with conspiracy against the Empire. He was to be hung in the Millennium Square, and his name forgotten.

Professor Oppenhauser was ecstatic in his office, rejoicing at his marvel. He rushed to gather as many colleagues as possible, to show them his working perpetual motion machine. As they sped towards his office, a sudden tremor rushed through the grounds. The destruction of Stygga Castle by the lodge has sent blast waves far and wide, as far as Oxenfurt. In the blast the machine got hit, and forever more stopped working.

Back at the parade Hierarch Hemmelfart was in disgust at the dwarves, mercenaries, and other non humans receiving fanfare. They must be written out of the story for historical purposes, he thought. Along with Djikstra, who he had a disdain for. Phillipa, reading his thoughts, felt otherwise, and she would ensure Djikstra remained for as long as she needed him. Meanwhile, priest Willemer looked at Phillipa with disgust and thought how one day the sorceresses will get what they deserve. The blame, the outcast nature, for not stopping something wretched, or being unable to cure it.

A cat named Ginger was unwell, dying hideously. It had caught a rat in the port of Cintra which had emerged from the ship Catriona. It did not eat the rat, but managed to get coivered in fleas from it. Later an old woman smacked the sick cat from her steps with a broom, but in the process managed to get bitten by a flea.

The Scoia’tael had arrived in Dillingen on their boat, captive and awaiting their trial. As the disembarked the mercenaries pulled three from the ranks, Faoiltiarna, a Mr Riordan, and a Mr Bri Cri. The mercenaries dragged the shackled elves to a shed, and informed them that even though amnesty was given to them at trial, the families of their victims had paid for their deaths. Faoiltiarna could only watch as the other two elves were killed, but before it was his turn he managed to free himself of his shackles and make a run for it by bursting through the window and onto the jetty below. Faoiltiarna dove into the water but was dragged down by his shackle, while the men fired crossbow bolts into the water to kill him.

The parade in Novigrad continued, and Djikstra and Phillipa found a moment to whisper to each other. Dijkstra explained that he knew King Vizimir was assassinated the previous summer by more than just a mad elf. He had proof, and wanted a private audience with the sorceress to discuss it.

Djikstra went back to his private quarters and met his secretary, Ori Reuven. Djikstra admitted to Ori that he had made a foolish mistake, and said one word, just one, to one person too many. Now they were coming for him in Tretogor Castle. Silently they moved, killing the sentries and guards. They made their way to Ori’s chamber, knowing their was no other way out for Djikstra. They burst in the door only to discover Ori alone. Djikstras chamber was also empty, and they threatened Ori but learnt nothing. They didn’t kill him, but Ori did spend six years in various prisons being interrogated to no avail. He died a year after his release, old and frail.

The pilgrim, the elf, and Boreas Mun stared into the dying embers of their fire. Breaking the silence, Boreas announced it was time to leave the past behind them. They were on a dangerous path to Elskerdeg and beyond that, Zerrikania and Hakland. Boreas introduced himself, in an act of friendship. Soon after the large pilgrim stood up and shook his hand. Djikstra introduced himself as Sigi Reuven. Finally the elf did the same, and Faoiltiarna introduced himself as Wolf Isengrim.

To be concluded.......
