Can You Really Buy Things with Crypto? Here’s What You Need to Know

Yes, You Can Buy Things with Crypto—But There’s More to the Story

In a recent video by Stronghold ($SHx), they dive into the question of whether you can actually buy things with cryptocurrency. The video, shot by the Stronghold team, explores the current challenges and the potential future of crypto as a mainstream payment method. But why isn’t crypto the main way we pay for things yet? Let’s break it down.

1. Volatility: The Price Rollercoaster

One big reason is volatility. The value of cryptocurrencies can change rapidly. Imagine buying a coffee for $5 worth of Bitcoin today, but tomorrow that same Bitcoin could be worth $4 or $6. This makes it hard for both businesses and customers to know what they’re really paying or earning.

2. Scalability: Can Crypto Keep Up?

Another issue is scalability. Many blockchain networks, which are the backbone of cryptocurrencies(BTC,ETH), can only handle a limited number of transactions per second. This slow processing power means that crypto isn’t ready to handle the high volume of daily transactions that traditional payment methods manage with ease.

In my view, blockchain networks like Stellar ($XLM), on which SHx is built, have effectively addressed scalability challenges.

3. Regulation: The Rules Aren’t Clear

Governments around the world are still figuring out how to regulate cryptocurrencies. This uncertainty makes businesses hesitant to accept crypto because they don’t know what risks they’re taking on. Plus, when you buy something with crypto, it’s considered a taxable event, which adds another layer of complexity.

4. Usability: It’s Still Complicated

For the average person, using crypto isn’t exactly straightforward. Managing digital wallets and private keys can be confusing, and until it becomes easier for everyone to use, crypto will struggle to replace traditional payment methods.

So, Why Should We Use Crypto?

Despite these challenges, there are some clear benefits to using crypto:

- Lower Transaction Fees: Credit card companies charge merchants 2-3% per transaction. Crypto transactions can be much cheaper, making them attractive for businesses with tight profit margins.

- Global Reach: Crypto allows for immediate, low-cost international transactions, which is a huge advantage in our global economy.

- Financial Inclusion: Crypto offers people in parts of the world without stable banking systems a way to participate in the global economy, opening up new markets for businesses.

The Future of Crypto Payments

So, will crypto ever become the main way we buy things? It’s hard to say for sure, but there are reasons to be optimistic. Technological advancements are already being made to solve issues like scalability and transaction speed. Plus, as regulations become clearer, businesses may start adopting crypto more confidently.

Stablecoins, which are a less volatile form of cryptocurrency pegged to stable assets like the US dollar, could also help bridge the gap between crypto and everyday purchases.

What do you think? What will it take for crypto to become our main currency? Let’s keep the conversation going!
