A question that I sometimes encounter when reading posts on Reddit is "What are some crypto related books?" or some variation of that question.
In this post I will briefly write about a book that I think is definitely worth reading even though it was published in 2018. I've probably read it 3 or 4 times now and each time I have, I'm reminded of Bitcoin's existence and significance. In fact each time I finish reading the book, I buy some more Bitcoin.
If you haven't already checked it out, the book is "The Bitcoin Standard" by Saifedean Ammous, PHD, who's a Professor of Economics at the Lebanese American University and member of the Center on Capitalism and Society at Columbia University.
As Ammous is an economics professor, the focus on this book is the economics of money (money supply) and how and why Bitcoin ties in to this. If you don't know much about economics, you don't need to worry as it's not necessary to understand the contents of the book. However, It would help if you had a basic understanding of how money works (the money supply) but it's not needed as Ammous is able to break down the concepts in a very logical and easy to follow manner.
In the book, Ammous starts off with what money is and how money has been used in the past. He then addresses why some forms of money such as stones, seashells, cattle, and salt have failed as a currency. After explaining why those particular items have failed as a currency, he then talks about why people have moved to using precious metals as a currency. He later looks at examples throughout history as to why nations have failed due to the abuse of monetary responsibility by governments when using these metals as a currency.
He then addresses numerous examples throughout history on why nations have moved away from using precious metals as a currency to the current fiat system. Next, he points out the pitfalls of the current fiat system and why we should be on a gold standard. Lastly, he looks at why Bitcoin would be a better substitute than gold as he highlights several reasons as to why Bitcoin is superior.
Now, the purpose of this post wasn't intended to give you a summary of the book but rather, it was intended to pique your curiosity and to get you take action to read the book.
Here's a video review I made about the book:
