What has happened to PancakeSwap?

By nervi | Crypto Journalism | 21 Mar 2021

On 15 March PancakeSwap was attacked by a hacker and DNS addresses from the GoDaddy site were taken over. The attack was coordinated and Cream.Finance was also hit. Fortunately, this did not affect the contracts that PancakeSwap operates. The attack was only on the front-end of the website.

Cream.Finance announced on Twitter that their DNS had been taken over. Moments later, PancakeSwap was no longer available. Their DNS had also been taken over. The team reacted brilliantly to get any news outlets to stop linking to the site and to post appropriate warnings. At the same time, a backup domain was purchased and the DNS recovery process began. Three hours later DNS access was recovered and an IPFS backup was implemented.

Many users were worried that their wallets had also been attacked and would lose access to their funds. Fortunately the attack was only on the website and as long as the user did not enter a seed phrase they could not be robbed. Due to such attacks, the PancakeSwap team is migrating from GoDaddy to MarkMonitor to ensure domain security. Backup domains have been purchased to ensure the site is available in case of an emergency.
