By Yugocean | Crypto Champion | 15 Jan 2023

Bitcoin mining is being used to save Africa's oldest national park, which may come as a blow to those who are raging about the environmental damage caused by bitcoin mining.

Virunga National Park

Established in April 1925, Virunga National Park, located in the Albertine Rift Valley of the Congo, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Virunga was struggling with the loss of revenue due to guerrilla attacks, armed insurgents, and a lack of tourism due to the pandemic. Cryptography became the means of its protection.

Bitcoin Saving Wildlife

Director Emmanuel de Merode began taking cryptocurrency donations to save the park, and in the process, the park started mining bitcoins. Bitcoin mining saved a national park rich in biodiversity from being destroyed.
