Kraken gets MiCA
Kraken, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, has recently obtained the MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) licence from the Central Bank of Ireland. This development follows Kraken's earlier acquisition of the MiFID licence in February 2025 and the EMI licence in 2023, enabling the exchange to provide financial instrument services and issue electronic money across all 30 member countries of the European Economic Area (EEA).
Regulations will be imposed on centralized platforms
The imposition of stricter regulations on centralised platforms is a key aspect of the MiCA framework. While this may limit economic freedom for European users, Kraken's attainment of the MiCA licence demonstrates its commitment to adhering to EU regulatory standards. This ensures robust customer protection, transparency, and oversight, ultimately safeguarding users from potential scams perpetrated by centralised platforms, with the exception of decentralised cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
My point
As the second-largest exchange in the US, Kraken's MiCA licence solidifies its position as a leader in the European crypto market. This licence enables Kraken to expand its services and further strengthen its reputation as a reliable platform for European users. Kraken is a centralised platform, so do not expect economic freedom under regulation, Kraken may build trust with its users and establish a strong foothold in the European market.
