Google wants to secure Crypto. But can we trust big tech?

Google is launching a new security system to protect crypto assets using multi-party computation, or MPC.

The system splits control of a private key across multiple systems, so a single compromised system can't authorize a transaction on its own. Google is already using this technology to secure some of its Ethereum and Solana assets.

My opinion is that it's good to see Google taking this seriously, as AI-powered attacks are becoming increasingly common, alongside serious concerns about quantum attacks.

However, I have some doubts about big tech companies in general, both in terms of their intentions and the quality of the work they deliver, especially now that everything is being vibe-coded.

A good example to learn from is the OpenBSD project, which has been working on making OpenSSH secure against quantum akttacks for quite some time. And they don't use AI to vibe-code such a mission-critical piece of software. Above all, it's fully open source, so anyone can inspect and verify the code.
