As I mentioned in my March situation report, I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about my online presence and how I feel like I'm all over the place and yet nowhere at the same time. I'm not aiming at becoming insta-famous or whatever, but I would like to consistently share things and build/join a community around said things. In the long run, I would like to start one or more online businesses that I have been building in my notes, and I need to make sure I can address enough people, and the right people, for it to even have a chance of working.
The problem today is that I share a lot of things on a lot of different topics via a lot a of different platforms:
- On Publish0x, I regularly write about crypto, personal finance, filmmaking, my own videos, wildlife and travel photography, space, sports, the environment and, occasionally, more random topics.
- On Youtube, I post parodies of actual movie trailers, completely made up trailers, simple sketches, more-elaborate-and-good-looking-but-still-funny videos, travel videos, and there's even a video editing tutorial hiding in the midst of all this. It's just a playground for me to practice and learn new editing skills.
- On Instagram, I actually have 3 accounts:
- My main one, where I post my wildlife photography, some random photos, teasers for my Youtube videos, some of the same sketches I post on Youtube and some "exclusives".
- My "Albert and Elizabeth" one, where I post travel pictures.
- My "Plastic in Nature" one, where I post pictures of plastic... in... nature... and call out the companies responsible for manufacturing and selling said plastic.
- On Twitter, I read about and talk about absolutely everything.
- On my website, I talk about basically nothing. It's like a linktr.ee but less pretty, less convenient and more expensive.
- On my Buy Me A Coffee, I don't even know what to talk about anymore, because of all of this.
So what do I do from here?
Having a lot of ideas is good, but it can also be overwhelming. I've always had projects brewing in my brain, but I never have the time, resources or motivation to go through with all of them. Now that I'm freelancing and struggling to find work, the one benefit is that I get a lot of free time to further develop my ideas, but I'm starting to realize that, on the public platforms that are social media websites, I'm not making any sense posting so many unrelated thing all the time.
When I created my Buy Me A Coffee page, I was asked to complete this sentence when setting up my profile: "Pierre Lizet is...". And that raised the question of: what am I doing? Why would people want to buy me a coffee? What kind of value am I creating? What am I "known" for on the web, if anything at all? What brought people to this page?
Being diverse is a good thing, being too diverse makes me feel like I'm losing people along the way and I can't really build a consistent following, which is key when launching an online business. Should I stick to only one type of video on my Youtube channel? Should I stick to only one type of photography on Instagram? What should my website reflect and advertise? Should I create X accounts on all the social networks to go through with my X ideas? These are some of the questions I've been asking myself recently.
I was originally going to make only one article covering all of this, but I'm more and more realizing that this will take longer than I expected, so I'll probably cover each platform in a separate article, once I figure out exactly what I want to do with them.
Were you ever faced with the same questions?
