I am a huge sports fan and a even bigger baseball card and autograph collector. I have been playing TOPPS Bunt a lot since the last few months to kill time and let me feel like I am still collecting cards without spending any money. TOPPS has recently shown an interest in blockchain by launching some Garbage Patch Kids (GPK) on the Wax Blockchain.
This made me wonder if any of the card manufacturers were using blockchain at all. Much to my surprise there was one that did! The largest sports card manufacturer, Panini America, does have its own blockchain. Panini is the official sports card maker of the NBA, NFL, NHL and many others.
Their blockchain though is not what I would call a norma blockchain nor are the items for sale truly digital collectibles or NFT. Panini auctioned off 100 cards to start off with but than issued physics cards to represent them. Panini still operates them with way and you can get physics cards that have their blockchain logo on them that you can redeem on the blockchain. Again it’s not a true NFT because in the rules of their blockchain they say you can keep the physics copy and sell the blockchain or vice versa. Thus there are really two copies of each card one physical and one digital.
While a unique and good idea it obviously has some short comings. This approach though I have to give them credit for. It really tries to bring along with it the old school collectors. Those who honestly have vast sums of money they can spend on cards and hopefully in the future NFT cards issued by these companies! It is a logical step that hopefully they continue to work on. Hopefully TOPPS will also begin to issue more cards on WAX after how well it turn out with the GPK as those packs are now worth thousands of dollars!
