Brave Browsers Two Big August Announcements

By Cje95 | Chronic Illness and Crypto | 30 Aug 2023

After being quiet for a couple of months Brave Browser came back this month and let loose with two big announcements this month. These updates did not deal with crypto or blockchain which I did see as a bit of a bummer since we haven't gotten a Brave update that has dealt with either of those since May. However, you could argue that these updates were much bigger than crypto and blockchain because of what they consisted of.

Update One: Leo

Brave has built upon its impressive foray into AI with the beta launch of its native AI assistant. I have come to absolutely love the Brave Search Summarizer so to see the Dev team build upon that success is a huge win for the browser users to say the least! How they came up with its name I have no idea but it is called Leo and I would expect to see it come out to all of the desktops over the next couple of months as the Dev team gets feedback from the Brave Nightly users.

Leo has a variety of uses including allowing users to interact with the web pages they’re visiting without leaving the page itself. Leo can also suggest follow-up questions, augment original content, and even help with reading comprehension. Leo can answer questions just like other AI-powered chatbots, but directly within the experience of a web page. It also continues Brave's biggest and most important goal which is maintaining users' privacy via reverse proxy and some other technical things.

With AI's becoming more and more common I will be interested to see if they will allow plugins for Leo since that has been something that has become increasingly common with various AIs, particularly ChatGPT.

Update Two: Brave Search

When Brave made the huge move to run its own APIs for Brave Search there was one pretty significant drawback to this. Users would still have to choose between Bing and Google for their images and video searches an obvious issue that the Dev team was known to be working on. Brave finally has completed the API workload that they needed to and now Brave Browser can be used to search images and videos as well!

This is a key for Brave as it completes its Brave Search product! Now users can leverage a fully privacy-focused search experience without having to go outside of Brave to someone like Google or Bing. To some people, this might not sound like the biggest thing but for someone like myself who is big into limiting tracking whenever I can being able to keep everything in-house with Brave is an amazing step in the right direction.
