Brave has been pretty busy these last couple of weeks with five posts already in March and it's only the 14th! These updates have brought with them a slew of new features that really enhance the security aspect of Brave and really further it as the go-to browser when it comes to seeking browsing privacy. Unlike recent Brave posts only two of the five deal with the crypto space and the other three are feature upgrades or introductions one of which I have already written about.
Crypto Space Updates
On March 3rd Brave released its annual State of BAT but in the name of transparency, I have not yet read into it beyond just skimming it. As an annual report should it does have a ton of data and graphs in it covering what has happened in the last year and what they are planning to do in the future. A couple of things here caught my eye and it was using BAT to purchase NFTs with some sort of utility and also creating the ability to pay for something on-chain with BAT. This second one, in particular, could be a huge breakthrough for BAT and help give it a nice push to drive a possible run.
The other post announced the launch of an off-ramp for crypto where users will be able to sell crypto in their Brave Wallets for fiat. Given the recent banking events, it will be interesting to see if this is something that is going to continue or if Brave's partner Ramp has gotten caught up in the whole banking sector meltdown. Even though the calendar has rolled over to 2023 it is fantastic to see Brave continue to work on and built out its Wallet allowing them to become more and more independent of other services that otherwise people would have to use.
Privacy Focused Updates
While we all love crypto-related updates Brave has made some fantastic privacy-focused announcements I believe users are going to love! Starting with the beginning of the month when Brave released an update pertaining to Google Sign-In. While it is convenient and thus very popular it does have the downside of affecting one's privacy. Previously, Brave did a fantastic job in still doing all they could to combat cookies and other data collection methods that leverage Google Sign-In and now they have really upped their game. Instead of having to be worried about your settings to see if the Global Toggle was on or off and then depending on that have to deal with giving the site an exception or not Brave has moved to a permission-based system simplifying the experience.
Finally, Brave + VPN, powered by Guardian, has been brought to desktop devices as well. This completes the trifecta as Andriod and iOS devices have had this capability for a bit now. If you purchase the VPN then you have the ability to connect 5 devices to it and that is what made the desktop addition so important as most people still have a PC or desktop of some sort. Compared to others it is pretty reasonably priced as well since you can connect 5 devices for the price of $9.99/month or $99.99/year. With the standard additions of masking your VPN, changing your location online, and preventing your ISP from snooping on your internet activity. This addition really helps bring together the whole Brave + VPN subscription offering and could further drive people to use Brave.
AI Feature Addition
At the beginning of the month, Brave announced the rollout of a summarizing AI tool that would/could be used with Brave Search. I have written about it previously here and while I was skeptical at first I have to admit it is not half bad at its job. Not to mention I do appreciate how limited it is in nature so that I know where it is and honestly how to avoid it if I want to.
