Last week Brave announced and released an update to its browser that is a huge step in the right direction for crypto users with multiple wallets. This update contained support for EIP-6963 support in Brave Wallet on iOS, Android, and Desktop versions and was a result of collaboration with Brave Browser engineers, the cocreators of EIP-6963, and various other wallets.
The Issue
If you are like me EIP-6963 doesn't really mean anything to you but it is something that affects most crypto users. Back when extension-based wallets came into existence Metamask was one of the first players and they made a decision that ended up becoming the de facto standard in how DApps communicated with wallets. Extension scripts were used to inject a JavaScript object called "window.ethereum" with the DApp built around to communicate with the wallet. Since this was really the beginning and there were not a ton of extension wallets out there this choice did not affect people and worked really well. As crypto has grown though and people like myself started to use certain wallets for certain DApps and an issue arose with connecting to DApps because the wallets had to "fight" over the JavaScript code object "window.ethereum". For me this became an issue with using TaHo and MetaMask and having to turn off one wallet or the other since you had to use the MetaMask option to connect your TaHo wallet.
The Solution
This was something that the various wallet developers and connection libraries realized was an issue and in my opinion a limiting factor. Having multiple wallets and different wallet providers was just becoming more and more of a hassle and I was not a huge fan of it even though I loved the privacy and protection it provided. These various companies/providers came together as a group to "fix" this. With the "fix" instead of having to fight over the "window.ethereum" JavaScript object each wallet could "announce" itself individually and thus the DApp was provided a list of these announced wallets. This was displayed as seen below creating a much easier and simple way to navigate between wallets!
What's This Mean?!
According to Brave and the Group that has created this DApps will not be able to even choose to ignore window.ethereum altogether and communicate with multiple wallet providers at once! The Brave Blog says it best with the following example that really blows my mind!
That means, for example, that your favorite DeFi DApp can simultaneously connect your cold wallet with a ledger hardware via Brave Wallet, and your hot wallet in Metamask. You could thus have two addresses connected at the same time, perform a swap, and more seamlessly move your tokens between a hot and a cold wallet.
Interacting with wallets this way at the same time is not something I ever imagined doing in crypto but is an amazing possibility! This alone is going to really improve the user experience and it is fantastic to see Brave participating and helping push this across the finish line to help out multiple wallet users! I have been amazed so far with how simple it now is and love it!
