While the first half of the year was definitely the year of NFTs the second half of the year took a new turn or at least grew beyond NFTs alone. The Metaverse had taken over..... or at least people said it was and really you couldn't go a day without hearing about it. Something I found fascinating during all of this was the crazy hype that was being built up for something that still does not exist or at least does not exist on the level a lot of people made it out to be.
However since there are different augmented reality glasses/googles available it should not be a surprise to see that the metaverse in this aspect was a huge hit this year. For instance the company Meta, formerly known as Facebook, had the most popular app on Christmas. This is determined by which app is being the most downloaded and thus popular. Meta's Oculus AR app was the most popular and while they have some games for it the space is largely still being developed and like most Dapps or blockchain games leaves much to be desired.
That being said it is a decent first step and something that I do not have much against. Before this Christmas really the biggest places for Metaverse like features where simulators for either aircraft or for medicine where a virtual reality was created and crafted with different this arising. Meta has the reach and does have some pretty decent games on the Oculus to draw people in so that they do test out this technology. It is my personal opinion that the Metaverse is not going to be won by one company or platform in particular but rather different platforms will serve the needs for different things. Much like we do not have one internet provider or one social media platform (yes I know Meta owns several of the biggest but it is highly highly unlikely they or anyone will be able to pull that off again).
To me it would make a ton of sense to see someone like Microsoft has a business type world where meetings and other business like events take place while Roblox has the games and Decentraland has the houses/meeting spaces. While overtime it would make sense to see different bridges or companies to try and develop more it would make the most sense to see a specific business with its specific niche build up that and then try to branch out.
Overall, the Metaverse will take years and years to built out. Honestly, I wonder if it will ever truly be completed and that is something that is so special and unique about it! I look forward to seeing the developments that come the next few years and the adaptation. It was really cool to see though the idea to get its credit and support like it has gotten and the recognition it has received as seen by the popularity in both it and well the downloads for a Metaverse based thing in Oculus!
