When one refers to the Bible, often the reference is made to the Old Testament and the New Testament. The two Testaments bound together is a miracle of God, with the Old Testament being canonized by the children of Israel since 450 BCE, and the New Testament canonized over the centuries after 120 CE. What does New Testament and Old Testament mean in comparison with one another?
Dictionary.com provides the following definitions for the word 'testament':
1) either of the two major portions of the Bible: the Mosaic or old covenant or dispensation, or the Christian or new covenant or dispensation.
2) a covenant, especially between God and humans.
Therefore, the Old Testament and New Testament, are respectively, the Old Covenant, Law, and the New Covenant, Grace, between mankind and God. The Old Covenant is the Mosaic Law provided by Moses to the children of Israel on the Day of Pentecost, which is 50 days after the original Passover of Exodus. The New Covenant is proclaimed through Peter by the Holy Spirit on Pentecost 50 days after the Passover, when the Resurrected Christ sent His Spirit as promised to those waiting for Him in Jerusalem.
Christ fulfilled the Law and the Prophets of the Old Covenant, and replaced the voluminous Law with Acts 2:38-39 to enter into Grace by Faith. Because of Jesus Christ, the entire Law has been reduced to a single verse, to be followed by all those who believe in the name of Jesus Christ to enter into the Kingdom of God, and to be The Child of God the Father, eternally.
Faith invites a believer to follow the Promise of God found in Acts 2:38-39 to have eternal life and eternal safety. As Abraham had faith in God, and so walked in accordance with God's Promise, as the walls of Jericho fell based on following God's Promise, so too is Acts 2:38-39 a promise to those who believe in God to be saved. Acts 2:38-39 is the only Promise to be saved since the 1st A.D Pentecost after the Resurrection of Christ. Scripture is clear regarding the far-reaching, eternal aspects of the Acts 2:38-39 New Covenant with God:
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
The verse of Acts 2:41 confirms God honors those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and who follow God's New Covenant of Acts 2:38-39:
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:47 agrees that those who follow the New Covenant are added to the Christian Church, the Family of God:
And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
Follow the New Covenant in Acts 2:38-39 today to have eternal life and eternal safety, for there is no other Covenant between mankind and God to be saved from sin. In the Name of Jesus. God Bless.
