Even though I fully understand people's reservations, and I understand their concerns about privacy, I still maintain that my Meta Ray-Ban glasses are the best tech product I've ever bought.
My phone is great, but it's nothing new. It's an improvement on a technology we've had for ages. Same for my laptop. Same for my headphones.
But these glasses are something that didn't exist until not long ago, and they're great.
But when news emerged that Meta contractors and subcontractors can review sensitive video and image content captured by users, I was a lot of things, but shocked was not one of them.
I think we fail to understand a few truisms about the internet.
First, whatever you put online stays there forever.
Second, the company that sold you the product or the service has more extensive access and control over everything you use that product or service for thank you think.
Third, generally speaking, for most people, your photos, audio, conversations, are encrypted and probably not read or accessed by anyone else simply because they don't care. They only care about selling you more stuff, not 'exposing' you.
I think we don't realise - or accept - that privacy as we knew it gone. Say you're reading this on your Android, say you're on 5G with XYZ Mobile. That's already two companies (smartphone manufacturer + mobile carrier) that have either full or partial access your data.
We traded in our privacy for convenience a long time ago. And we're never going to get it back.
