Mercari, one of the largest Japanese online stores for purchasing new and used products (it has around 22 million monthly active users), is thinking of adopting Bitcoin as a new payment method.
In September 2022 it had already introduced the in-app exchange of BTC between users, it was enough to simply connect a BTC wallet to the app and that's it: "send" "receive", amount and confirm transaction.
According to Nikkei, the reference stock index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the new BTC payment method is scheduled for June 2024.
The branch dedicated to the Melcoin blockchain will take care of the infrastructure, which would also play the role of intermediary, receiving BTC and transferring the same value in dollars to the seller.
In this way the aim is to keep the transition commissions at the same level as those relating to the Yen.
*Mercari revenue grew 14% year-over-year in 2023, but with higher losses due to increased operating expenses and amortization of intangible assets. As a result, Mercari's stock market valuation decreased (-36.21%).
A move perhaps also to attract not only new customers but also investors, in a historical moment where Bitcoin is increasingly on everyone's lips, both retail and institutions.
Whatever the considerations, I believe it is a positive sign in terms of adoption, with the potential to push competitors to make the same choice and introduce Bitcoin as a payment method.
