Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, announced that starting September 1, 2025, it will cease support for its cryptocurrency on five cryptocurrency networks: Omni, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand. Announced on July 11, 2025, the decision responds to a strategic review of the company's infrastructure.
This change will affect clients and users holding USDT on these networks, who will be required to redeem or migrate their tokens to other supported chains. The move is part of an effort to optimize resources and focus on networks with greater activity and community and development support, according to a statement from Tether.
The company explained that the low adoption and lack of developer interest in these five networks motivated the decision. According to Tether, holding USDT on low-activity networks entails an operational cost that is not justified given the evolution of the global cryptocurrency ecosystem.
“Removing support for these chains allows us to focus on platforms that offer greater scalability, developer activity, and community engagement—all key components to driving the next wave of stablecoin adoption.”
Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether.
Thus, the company seeks to focus on more robust and active chains, such as Ethereum, Solana or Tron, which represent the majority of USDT transactions.
The end of support means that, starting on the indicated date, Tether will stop redeeming USDT on these networks and freeze any remaining tokens. To mitigate the impact on users, the company urged USDT holders to act quickly.
“Tether customers holding USD₮ on Omni, Kusama, SLP, EOS, and Algorand should redeem their holdings as soon as possible or, if they wish, request issuance of USD₮ on a supported blockchain, in accordance with our Terms of Service,” the statement reads. This recommendation underscores the need for users to take action before the deadline to avoid losses or complications.
The choice of these five networks isn't arbitrary. Omni, one of the first to support USDT in 2014, has seen a significant decline in usage. Bitcoin Cash SLP, meanwhile, has failed to maintain a solid user base compared to others. Kusama, known as Polkadot 's experimental network, faces similar limitations, while EOS and Algorand have lost relevance amid the rise of other networks.
Tether customers and users holding USDT on these networks will have until September 1, 2025 to redeem or migrate their tokens .
While this news particularly affects customers issuing USDT volume through Tether, the move could impact retail users, who could see their ability to move and liquidate stablecoins impacted following the withdrawal of support for Omni, Kusama, SLP, EOS, and Algorand.
